I just spent the last two hours drinking a nice bomber of chimay, it has occurred to me that my biggest hesitation is cost with this great beer. However it is cheaper by the oz. than even the least favorable wine in the wine and spirit shop! My question/ discussion point is: cheap wine vs. awesome world class beer. Cost vs satisfaction... Discuss...

We're all beer drinkers here. Doesn't that answer the question, solve the riddle, etc...?

To actually answer your question (though you might be in the wrong place for a serious answer), I've never gotten the satisfaction from any wine that I get from a decent beer. I have a lot of respect for wine, and I think it can be tasty, but my love is beer.

I dont like the taste of wine. I grew up with the cheap wine because my parents used to buy those gallons of Vin Rose or Cabernet Sauvignon you could get for like 12 bucks and I guess its good for getting drunk on but actual taste yeah its lacking.

I can't imagine what the results will be on this. You should make a poll on BeerAdvocate to see if Beer Geeks prefer beer or wine?

The question then becomes, have you tried good wine? or at least decent wine? That's like comparing all beer to Bud Light.
I myself am an equal opportunity drinker. Beer, wine, spirits, whatever. IT depends on the situation and the selections available. I drink more beer than other, mostly because of the cost per serving - wine doesn't keep open and I can't drink a whole bottle at one sitting.

I have actually given up a lot of wine for beer which says a lot on its own. I really love beer more even if traditionally wine is in our Italian blood!

    I'd take a $30 beer over a $30 wine any day.

Wine is a "sometimes" beverage. I mainly drink my husbands sangria... which is admittedly amazing. But other than that, there's no attraction. Give me a good stout or DIPA any day.

I like good wine. A good wine is like a great Stout or great DIPA. I like Martini's. I like Single malt scotch, Islay in particular. I like them all.

Yeah, whenever I end up with enough money to get into wine, I'll probably end up just getting more Belgian ales, sours, and big stouts.

Most of my friends seem to be much more into wine than beer, so I have to say I tried a lot more wine before ever getting into beer at all. In particular, one friend makes it a point to go to France ever year or so and bring back a lot of good wines that are not imported to the US.

I have had some really fantastic wines from France, Italy and Portugal that were obviously made with a lot of care, but honestly, all the wines I have drunk really get lost on me.
On the contrary, there are so many seemingly endless varieties of beers, not only in differing style, but the creativity and skill that the brewer puts into them.

I guess one could say something similar in terms of wine, but I guess I am not sophistimacated enough to know better. :slight_frown:

Sitting here enjoying a Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge, and not missing wine a bit!

I like how beer is more consistent from year to year where wine changes, the same wine in 2010 wine is not the same in 2011.

I worked for a French company, and wine was a staple. The better ones are a work of art, and it doesn't come in $15 bottles..

My family and most friends are oenophiles. Me too. I am a member of the James Beard Foundation.
But... for my every day beverage I have come to prefer beer mostly. For all these reasons:
    1. It's novel. I can try a new beer every day. That makes it an exploration.
    2. It's small packaged and small priced.
    3. It's lower cost overall for high quality.
    4. Beer will never run out of variations or surprises.
    5. It's so great with food, gardening, nature, and sweaty exercise - all the things I love most.
    6. It has zero elitism. It's egalitarian.
    7. It's ancient.
    8. It's bubbly.
    9. It's food. And it's great with food.
    10. It's just as good for you.

I can appreciate a good wine with certain dishes, but there is a perfect beer for every kind of food.

I'm both a beer and wine lover. With food, I usually prefer wine but there are many notable exceptions. I'm mostly into drinking Northern Rhone and Burgundy, especially well aged examples. The aromas in some bottles are other worldly and justify prices well north of $100 bottle to me. I've yet to have a beer that gives me the same emotional experiences I've gotten from my favorite bottles of wine. But to the specific question: world class beer > cheap wine, no question.
