Well they used whiskey but i feel it is relevant to many of our discussions here.
There are many occasions in which people drink a beer and review it or laud it/deprecate it and seem to fail to take into account the fact that they've only had it once and all the environmental variables are not brought to bear in their consideration. This point has been made frequently on this forum but
I think of that a lot when reading this site. It's always nice when science, in some small way, validates ones intuition.

If anybody knows of similar studies done that actually involve beer please post.

Drinking beer's not just about the liquid, that's for sure.

Yup, it has been brought up a lot on these forums. Glad you could (clearly necessarily) bring it up again. Oh, and with a study that (also clearly necessarily) needed to be done. Can we get a slow clap for the man!?

that's why I always sit in a blank room alone when I drink beer so I can focus in

So I guess it's tied to mood, and the setting influences the mood?

God job replying and thereby prolonging the life and increasing the viability of a thread whose topic you feel contributes only to noise on the forums

Of course now we get to know what you think (information which in no way contributes to noise) so i guess it was worth it.

2 brews that i had at different settings/atmosphere were fantastic IMO
Budweiser @ a Twins game in warm sunshine was great
Corona @ a Palm Springs Cantina watching the sun set with chips and salsa was a very memorable brew tasted great also

It doesn't take a study to show this, it's obvious.
There is no beer on the planet which I would rather drink at home alone than go to the pub and drink a decent well kept pint. It's the overall experience which makes beer what it is.

Ambience effects EVERYTHING in life. Needless to say if I am drinking something I have been holding onto I make sure I do it in a beautiful setting with people I enjoy being around.

Not surprisingly there seems to be fairly universal agreement that tastes are influenced by environmental variables. What is interesting to me is how many people forget this in the "X beer doesn't taste as good as last year" threads.

Now, in the NPR link, they used one glass of whiskey, moved from one room to the next, drinking that same drink. While I don't doubt setting affects our perceptions, wouldn't that glass of whiskey warmed as the experiment continued? That also brings out different aromas and flavors.

    I also use my motto.
you don't know the beer until you had it three times. of course many a bad beer as stopped me at 1 or less.:grinning:

on the other hand a sipper like that just is NOT the same as a beer to me. I drink them all.
I been known to sip whiskey and drink it fast, it depends...

Wait, you're telling me ambient smells have a bearing on taste?

    I'm freaking shocked.

Thanks for the link, OP. Don't mean to bash your efforts.
