Bottles missing from 4 & 6-packs?

I went to Wegmans earlier today and noticed many of the more expensive 4 and 6 packs of beer had bottles missing. I've heard of people doing this, but never actually seen it. The only explanation for this is that someone thought they could get away with paying the mix a six pack price but still get the better, more expensive beer that wasn't mixable. I was actually upset that someone had the audacity to do this. Stores need to start marking the beers that are available for mix six so the cashiers can tell if someone's trying to cheat them. What do you guys think about this?

Is this a joke? Am I the only one who's been to stores that let you buy singles of anything you want?

Definitely not, but Wegmans isn't one of them. They only do individual bottle prices for whatever is available in the mix six area.

EDIT: I see someone changed the title of this thread so it's not very clear that I went to Wegmans and not just any beer shop. Updated.

It seems to vary by state and/or region. Most places here let you pull singles of almost anything, but I've been to plenty of states (and/or stores) that don't allow that, so I know it isn't a universal practice.

One local store we have here called Party Source let's you do that, but they specialize in beer. Wegmans is a grocery store/supermarket that just happens to have a really good beer selection. Grocery stores are less likely to put individual bottle prices.

I see the same thing in my wegman's. I usually try to bring it to someone's attention and I believe it is the reason the that the dogfish head 120's are behind glass. It discouraging to think that someone will take advantage like that. If gone unchecked it could change what is ultimately available in that section. Putting some kind of mark on the label or giving those bottles a special scanning code might work ( but then they would have to be scanned individually).

Sounds like a practice designed for abuse. How could the "wrong" bottles not wind up in a mix six? Still, why be upset that others are cheating? Doesn't mean you have to cheat.

I had a problem once where I wanted a sixpack but there were only five bottles left and the cashier wanted to charge me 5x the individual bottle price. But that was easy enough to rectify.

I've often seen more expensive six-packs filled with six Blue Moons or something. The peabrained moral cripple fills say 6 Two Hearted in a Blue Moon carton, bang, beat the system, man! If caught, they should be forced to drink Blue Ribbon and no other beer.

I've done it when buying singles. I assume any 4-6 pk already split is probable old and there's no telling how long it's been sitting on that shelf, you lose some inventory control. A better shot at fresher if you grab one just put on the shelf after being fully stocked. I just assumed most did this, especially with time sensitive beer that's not bottle dated. But this store splits most everything, I'm not trying to get over, actually I'm paying more for that single.

Certain Wegman's do mark them. If it's a big enough issue for the store.

I have seen some places here in Texas that will put a wax like strip on the bottle caps of the pick 6ers. that way the cashier will know whats up if the bottle doesn't have the strip.

Surprisingly I've never seen it happen at Publix here. I've always wondered what's to stop someone from trying to sneak some Chimay into the $10 mix a six though (other than having some morals and not being a scumbag)

For those wondering why we should care about others taking advantage, it is that eventually we pay more for things because of it.

Why waste your time being mad, this person is a gift from heaven, just put the left over 2 Hearteds in the Bluemoon pack and buy it. The store won't lose any money and you'll save some.

I haven't seen it, though I'd think it would be more common to slip a brewery's more expensive option into a sixer of one of their flagships. For example, replace three Kalamazoo Stouts with Expedition Stouts and buy that sixer of "Kalamazoo Stout" for $9.99. Usually places I've been to will check the mix-six packs but not really look at a regular sixer.

My brother works at Wegmans and says this is a huge problem. A lot of the stores are putting small circles on top of the bottles for mix a six.

I see it all the time in places that offer a mix-a-six. I just always assumed it's because people wanted the cold stuff from the fridge case instead of the room-temp off the shelf.

I also see this a lot from places that DON'T offer a mix-a-six and in those cases, I figure it's punk high-school kids shoplifting beer to be cool since it's rarely the good beers that end up one bottle light.
