First off, I'm sorry if this sounds pretentious, but I swear that's not what I'm going for!

The point of this thread is to see if there is anyone else out there in Texas who has some crazy rare beer (20+ year old gueuze, one off Cantillon/Drie Fonteinen, Kaggen, Cable Car, Deviation, T20, Veritas 006 or earlier, DONGs, BA Dark Lords) that they would like to share with a small group at a "whale" tasting.

I have some very old bottles of gueuze and some other nice things that I'd like to open up with a small group and I'm aiming to cap it around 8 people. I believe 8 is a good number so that everyone can get a decent pour of the bottles they bring, and won't feel "cheated" or anything like that. I think we have 4-6 already (including me) in our group, that is if everyone can make it into town. I'm aiming to have this tasting sometime in June or early July, probably on a Sunday afternoon.

    Here's the "pretentious" part.
I'm not looking for people that have a Beatification b5, King Henry, CBS, Black Tuesday, Chocolate Rain or other recent "whales". While they are all great beers and would be welcomed at this tasting, I'm looking for a true "white whale" as your "ticket" into this tasting. If you're interested in something like this, start a conversation with me and let me know what beer(s) you might be able to contribute. If you're not interested please just SP (scroll past).

We all have our regular tasting groups were I feel that is completely appropriate, but like I said, I'm aiming for quality and small numbers at a tasting that might bring together a couple of random people in Texas with very deep cellars who are a looking for a reason to open something they've been waiting for.

Ok, I have to say it... 'cause I know no one else will.

Why anyone would post such a, yes, pretentious(you can pretty it up all you want, but if the shoe fits...) request for a tasting on a board with the word "Advocate" in it's title is beyond me. This is absolutely the opposite of advocacy. You have every right to drink your "whales" with whomever you please, and set whatever restrictions you'd like to this gathering, but announcing it on this site, where you know the majority of others, who aren't as fortunate as you, will read it... well that's just douchey.

Get yourself a "secret circle" of friends... send private conversations to those who you feel might have access to something rare... hell, place an ad in the Greensheet for all I care! Instead of rubbing it in everyones face that they're not as "special" as you. I know for a fact DFW has these types of tastings(nothing wrong with them at all), but you've never once seen them requesting others to join, with those kinds of restriction, on this board.

For the record, I have a couple bottles, myself, that would be considered by many as "whales", and would much rather share them with BA's/or friends alike who DIDN"T have access to beers equally as rare. I prefer drinking my beers with non-douchebags... thank you very much.

    /rant... Let the backlash begin!

WIshed I kept that batch 3 of beat now. oh well. Beer is beer, and at the end of the day it boils down to that. I have to agree with raffy on this. kinda douchey  Just make sure you have everyone bring their whales in an aluminum breifcase....austinite ba's get this reference.

That has to be the most ridiculous response I have read in quite a while. Mike shares killer beers with people down here which most of us can not get. If guy wants to set up a tasting with a few people who have rare beers which only meet a certain level then its his right to do so. You're free to share your whales with people who have never had them, marinate meat with them, or pour them out for your dead hommies or Biggie Smalls. Who cares, its your beer, do with it what you want to do.
If you think Beer Advocacy means you have to share super rare shit with everyone then go for it. Do you share money like you share beer? I believe 1 or 2 Dallas guys are coming down for this, I assume they are not part of your tasting group as you probably would not hang around such douche bags and with such a high moral compass you surely would not drink their beer. On a personal note, I was recently denied entry into a whale BIF with the beers I submitted, did I wine about this, of course not because I understand people have a right to do what they want when they set something up.

Completely agree, and you beat me to the punch. How many ultra rare Whale tastings are these guys going to have? What I love so much about the Houston and Austin monthy gatherings is that it is all inclusive. And those tastings always have great stuff, whale or not. Anyway, don't really care what kind of tasting it is. If you don't want everyone to come, make it a private conversation.

I seriously meant no harm from this thread, you got the wrong impression. I've shared a fair of amount of "whales" with plenty of people in many different environments. I've been generous with every bottle that I've come across.I was mainly just trying reaching out to anybody that I might have not met and was possibly new to the boards, or the area. Unfortunately it's hard to find a "secret circle" of friends with rare beer, so I turned to a beer site. Where there also happen to be posts almost identical to this in other regional forums...

If you don't like it, just Scroll Past. I'm not trying to be special or rub it in anyone's face, I'm just trying to reach out and asked people to message me if they're interested. You're the one that's going to turn this into a shit show.

It doesn't matter how many whales you have shared, the point is you start a thread about a "whale tasting" in which you only want 8 people to come, and only bring the rearest of the rare in a public forum. It is better to do this in a private message with a few people you know, or have seen post in the forums. I go this rought all the time. It works a lot better.

Because OP wants to drink his rare beers in company of rare beers?

Also advocacy? I usually don't use this term but LOL, seriously. Let the man drink his beer as he sees fit?

Like I said, I posted this because I have seen other posts like it on this site. I had tapped out my resources as far as people I knew and thought I would go a little further. Maybe someone out there has a whale and would like to knock a lot of long time wants off in one day and meet some new people.

Pimptastic is a very generous person...and has advocated great beer, However maybe a lower profile post/private conversations etc...might have worked better.

Believe me, I debated whether or not to say anything considering the fact that I always thought of you as a rather stand up guy(obviously from your posts alone since we've never either conversed or met)... but in the end it had to be said.

This topic has been pretty much boiling over from other similar type threads(OP to be left unnamed, but have, on cue, expressed interest in this thread). I suppose I should have bitten my tongue once again, considering the OP... or maybe I should have said something sooner. Fact is my "douchey" comment wasn't necessarily intended towards you as much as the though of these types of threads being out there.

Again EVERYONE(or for those who have obviously missed my point), I'm not knocking what you do with your "whales" or who you do it with. I just didn't think this was the proper medium to relay YOUR intent. You see it your way... I respectfully disagree.

Figured you'd respond. And you really need to pay more attention. You pretty much repeated half the shit I said.

And no, privately invited or not, "whale tastings" are not my thing.

Excuse me for wandering to your profile, but would you give up your whales for Masala Mama (your Want)?

I am really not understanding why you are so bothered by this. It's a public forum for the region. pimptastic lives in the region.

You are acting like you are personally being slighted and you and the general populous are loosing out getting to drink some whales because he made a post in public. I suspect the tasting would happen whether or not he posted it in here, but now people like me who have never met (okay maybe once but drinking ensued and I don't remember) pimptastic have the opportunity to potentially go to this tasting.

Yes, I can see why you might think posting about drinking a bunch of whales might be some clever attempt to taunt you, but believe it or not, when most people make a post about setting up a tasting, the do it because they want to have a tasting, not to hurt your feelings. I'm sorry you don't have a bottle to bring and/or you just don't want to participate in this tasting, but his post is not hurting anyone and the tasting is open to anyone.

I'm also amused how bothered you are by the concept of excluding people. Almost everyone on this site excludes people I can pretty much guarantee if someone was throwing a tasting, and 1 guy wanted to go but he was only going to bring some bud light platinum, people who have no problem telling him no, not without SOMETHING to contribute, he's still welcome but you he's gotta at least make a bit of effort. So pimptastic wants to raise the bar, that's his prerogative, it's still open to anyone who wants to pop open a whale.

As for the limiting on the number of people, how many people do you think he should allow? 10? 20? 30? Would you really want to go to a whale tasting with 30 people? "Oh snap, this half ounce of blaber is awesome, I can almost taste it, so much better than that quarter ounce of kaggen, I could barely taste that one...". So at what point does it become acceptable to say enough people is enough or there is no point in opening these bottles?

Also, I can pretty much guarantee, even if pimptastic did fill up his tasting with 8 people, and then you messaged him and said you wanted to come and bring a bottle of Wooden Hell or some other awesome whale, that he would accommodate you and invite you to attend. The fact is peoples definitions of what constitutes a whale vary by quite a bit, making the tasting smaller makes it a bit more clear that this isn't a tasting for mini whales ala king henry or hunapus.

Anyways, I appreciate you posting this xpimptastikx, I have a bottle coming in the next week or so (don't actually know what it is, 1 of 3 possibilities from a BIF) that may qualify, so I'm still gonna try and go, otherwise best of luck in getting a good selection and have fun ^_^.
