So i've been told that alcohol inhibits protein synthesis, meaning that if you have alcohol in your system, your muscles won't rebuild themselves and grow as much as they would if there was no alcohol present. I just wanted to get your thoughts and reactions to that.

I personally love having a post workout beer, despite what i've been told. And after a rigorous workout, i kinda feel like i've earned it. Whats your take?

I don't know if it's good for you or not, but there's nothing better than a nice hefeweizen after a long hike in the mountains. I always pack a cooler with enough beer for myself and whoever I'm hiking with to have one or two when we get back to the car.

I picked my workout spot because it had a micro brew pub next door!

I do the same thing. After the workout I'll pound a protein shake, then I like a beer shortly thereafter. Something crisp, refreshing, and smooth like a Mother's Tow Head or a Kona Big Wave. I don't think there's enough alcohol in a beer to inhibit protein uptake. Heck, we used to pound a can of Coors Light during halftime of rugby matches. The carbs were like a short-term shot in the arm.

I think as long as you're not taking tequila shots post-workout then it's fine.

I think it really depends on your goals. Are you looking to become a body builder? A world class athlete? Maintain a healthy body?

In my opinion, as long as your physically active, work hard, or have a laborious job, your really free to eat what you wish in (key word) moderation.

For example, Floyd mayweather is one of the best boxers ever to live, and he claims to have never had a protein shake. He eats out everyday, and bbqs on the weekend. His buddy in crime, Adrien Bonner is even worse.

Michael phelps is another notorious unhealthy eater, but he's one of the best at his craft. He consumes some 20k+ calories a day and most of its pasta, pizza, and a cold one or three to wash it all down with.

I work out 5 days a week(twice a day, am/pm split) and I consume 1-3 craft beers a night on average. I do spike my insulin post workout with a decent serving of whey and casein protein and carbs carbs carbs. I usually weight 2-3 hrs post workout to allow my body ph to stabilize and allow protein synth to at least begin before I drink. What works for me, may not for you

    Cheers

Unless you are training for mr universe i dont think a beer will matter. I like a cheap AAL after training.

I've heard the same thing and really cannot dispute it. I can report, based on extensive field testing, that if you drink IPAs immediately after an intense cardio workout you will get drunk quick.

I take a 24g protein shake with just water after a session, and then I sometimes have a beer after that. I think it just depends how hardcore you are about making gains, but the important part is to get the whey protein in your body within 30 minutes of a workout to maximize recovery. At the finish line of the Chicago Marathon they give runners a couple of free Goose Island 312's. In any other context, Goose Island 312 is a remarkably mediocre beer, but in that moment, it tastes like liquid heaven. My scientific conclusion is that a beer or two will not kill you after a workout.

Protein synthesis, unless I'm mistaken, takes many days. So unless you're drinking a six pack a day, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. And if you ARE drinking a six pack a day, you'll have bigger problems than muscle building.

The act of working out starts/ fuels protein synth (up to 24 hrs in good genetics) but the majority of it occurs in the 24hrs after workout and in deep sleep.

All of this is totally dependent upon the individuals genetics. I really don't know if alcohol does or doesn't inhibit, but I would feel safe saying that it....depends on your genetics.

I have a hard time believing it only takes 24 hours... In most people, it takes about 5-10 days to fully recover from an adequately intense workout (you know, to the point you can barely hold a glass of water with one hand immediately following).

But yes, it does happen during REM sleep.

Genetics play a huge role. Some people activate protein synth in cell mitochondria within minutes and spikes once they eat post workout. Other it can take 30mins to a hour to start the process.

In my opinion, in regards to the average person, if it takes you 5-10 days to recover...you are only harming yourself(working out to much) or have really poo genetics. The average healthy person should be recovered in 24-48 hrs unless your new to it and then it will take longer...but there are exceptions...genetic exceptions.

In all honesty, if you are worried that alcohol inhibits your progress, don't take bro science for advice...either see a dr., or quit boozing. I recommend the first

I'm going to get trashed for this, but after playing hockey, get into the locker room, we always have someone bring a cooler full of BMC's. Having a cold crisp light beer not five minutes after playing is SO delicious and quenching.

I reckon, even if true, this would only apply to a very small subset of elite athletes.

And these scientists/researchers (or whoever comes up with these facts) seem to change their mind on anything and everything on a daily basis.

Anything in moderation is fine. If the thought of that beer drives you to push yourself more in the workout, to make you feel like you've really earned it, then it's likely a good thing.

What's to say that these scientist don't announce next week moderation is killing it all, go extreme
