I'd imagine it's sorta the same concept. This one even comes with its own tap: http://drinktanks.com/

Offers some of the same benefits of a can. Some have vacuum seals, better than most caps. You also avoid exposure to light. Generally I consume a growler shortly after it is filled so the benefits are minimized and the added price can make them less appealing. I would love to have a couple but my glass growlers have worked just fine so far.

I have to admit, I would miss the bottle caps. They're almost like a trophy . . .

I am a big fan of canned beers in general, though there is one concern that's rarely discussed, and that's the BPA content of the liner. I believe Sierra Navada has addressed this concern with the conclusion that there's simply no alternative currently available.

Agreed. Wonder if any BPA's would leech in to beer?

It's a known fact that can liners leach BPA into the contents of the can.

I hear there's these wonderful things called bottles so you don't have to ingest BPA while enjoying a tasty brew

This is a bad example, because kegs are made of stainless steel, not aluminum and don't have a liner, unless some brewery I don't know about is using stainless cans?

The plastic coating on the under side of bottle caps has BPAs as well. :slight_frown:

In all honesty I don't really care, but one can not be totally dismissive of this kind of stuff.

Not sure if your right or not, but I wish breweries would use a stainless cap, you also have to remember that most people don't age their beer with the bottle stored upside down or laying down, so contact with the cap would be minimal. Personally, I like cans for beers like Heady, but not for any beers that are ageable, people can argue whether BPA leaches or not but why take the chance. I also saw on a different thread before that there's a company (not a brewery that is using a different kind of liner for their cans). Whatever this new technology this is, I wish brewers would use it.

For the record, I love craft in cans. Portability, freshness, boom. Pours just the same as a bottle. All good.

There's a psychological aspect to cans I've never seen addressed. To many people, the 'can of beer' has served for most of their lives as the standard single unit of measure for a poundable beverage, even to some who are regular consumers of craft. One such friend of mine recently got bit in the ass by this lifelong psychological conditioning courtesy of a 6 pack of canned Sculpin that I procured and left at his house.

Apparently he was doing some work in his garage and consumed the entire 6 pack over the course of a few hours directly from the can as one might consume a sixer of a light canned AAL. He ended up completely shitfaced and still partially blames me for a series of enormously stupid decisions resulting from this ill-advised session. I maintain that it was entirely on him and that it should have been completely obvious not only from the taste but from the clearly printed ABV that he was drinking a higher-test beer worthy of respect (in more ways than one). I did the math for him and showed him that he basically pounded the equivalent of nearly a pint of whiskey. He still says "but dude, they were friggin' CANS!".

I still haven't told him what I paid for it. Wait until he gets the sticker shock of replacing that shit for me.

I think beers like Miller lite and cheaper beers I would drink 20 years ago ruined the canned idea for me. There was a difference. I know now that cans preserve the beer better, and I know that I pour my beers in a standard pint glass almost every time, It should not matter, but I still end up buying bottles if they are available out of habit.

Let me put it in a much simpler way, the day they stop bottling and switch to cans with my barrel aged goodies, will be the day I stop buying them. (Won't buy Ten Fidy because of that)

I'm all for more beers in a can I don't notice a taste difference so much easier in the trash just like them all around.

they *are* ... i don't know what the hell i'm going to do with mine, but i've held on to them since i got back into beer since january. those rochefort caps are the best.

i prefer canned beer because there is zero worry about light exposure. not having a bottle cap to fool around with after popping the top does sorta suck, but that's about the only drawback i can think of for the can beating the bottle argument.
