So, I went to a bottle shop that I rarely visit this morning, and came across a curious sight.
There, sitting on the shelf, were 9, count them 9, bottles of Double Dose IPA. Having already had the one bottle I could get my hands on, I said "Self....that's odd, and exciting."

Now, having been to this shop before, I knew that their prices are typically above average (by 1-2 dollars, depending on the product). Thinking about my previous bottle, I had paid $4.95, so I expected this one to perhaps be $5.99, and I would still have seriously considered it.

Instead, I pick up a bottle, and there is a fluorescent orange label stating that this 12 oz beauty was asking $9.99!!! I found myself indignant. Literally twice the price? Then, I realized what a true shame this is, since a price like that is simply prohibitive to actually selling the beer; and this being a style so sensitive to age.

What is the proper way to address such price gouging? Please do not respond with the typical "don't shop there" response. Obviously, for the everyday beer, that is the best option (walk out and move on to a better location. But for a rare, possibly one-of beauty such as Double Dose? Should I have said something?

How does the community as a whole handle a situation like this?

If I were that incensed about it, I imagine I would have spoken to the manager and just told him how cheaply you've obtained the same product elsewhere. That's really all you can do short other than the obvious answer of shopping elsewhere.

A business is free to charge what they want for what they sell, so long as the price is not regulated by law. The only way that the price gets lowered, is if no one purchases it. Not sure what else you can do. You can say something, but not sure that will really change anything, especially if they end up selling the next day. Money talks.

Just ask and try to talk him down. If it's not a corporation, I don't see why you couldn't bargain a little. He needs to sell the beer just as badly as you want to drink it. Find a price with which you can both agree on. If there's no agreement, forget it.

Is the beer in question one that you're in the distro area for?

A bottle shop in my area was recently selling cans of Heady Topper for $8 a piece. Now, I don't know how much Heady costs.. But, I know it's not that much. I took into consideration the obvious fact that we're not within a 30 mile radius of Waterbury so we're way out of the distro area meaning someone muled it to SW Pennsylvania from Vermont. That's clearly going to drive up the price as their overhead for getting it into their store was significant.

Not gouging. Not your job to address this. Money talks, if the price is really that outrageous the store will learn. Then again, people out there are more than willing to pay these high prices, thank them for the over pricing practices thriving.

I think you answered your own question when you said, "don't shop there."

But I'm more concerned with your admission of talking to yourself in the aisles of the bottle shop.

Not gouging, don't shop there if you don't like it, it is there beer so they can charge what they want.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the thing with the Heady is possibly illegal, if out of distro. I might be wrong but I may want to check. Heady is about $3/can.

If they were priced lower they probably would have been completely gone by the time you got there. The higher price at least gives the people who really love it a chance to find it on the shelf before it clears out.

I would tell them prices are out of line & let them they will probably lose all future sales if this truly PO'd me. Otherwise you are part of the problem

The problem is the people who pay prices that are out of line. Speaking up is not really going to do much here. You can go and set them straight all you want but when the guy behind you happily hands over the money for what you feel is overpriced they are justified in their actions.

If I am a loyal customer & they don't value that, then I know where I stand. If I feel the pros outweigh the cons & continue shop there, then I need to just shut up & color. I have seen a couple place stop carrying beers because they wouldn't move at a suggested price point.

Was that because of me? Probably not, but I'd like to think my bitches were possibly still rattling around in the owners/beer guy's brains even if they weren't.

I get ya, though, the demand drives pricing more than anything.

Why don't you just come out and ask why it's priced the way it is, in comparison to standard going rate. He or she just might have a valid and reasonable answer....
