Stop shopping there and tell you friends. Unfortunately, people will pay what they can afford to pay, so if someone has a bit of disposable income, it may not matter to them.

I would contact the Beer Drinkers Union local 4892 and file a formal complaint.

Double Dose isn't available to me but I've seen several threads on here proclaiming how awesome it is. Perhaps the bottle shop owner is lurking on this site.

Talk to the manager. Tell him/her that the prices are nuts and if they aren't lowered, you'll dump out a Pliny on the ground in front of them.

17.99, that's more than double what I'd consider it to be worth. Another reason I don't usually buy imports unless I've done my homework or it's a tick. :grinning:

It does create a perspective doesn't it? If you feel like you are being gouged I would take the bottle to the register and say something there. Like; "Is that the right price on this?" And when they say; "Yes it is;" that's when you tell them you don't want it and why. No confrontation necessary. Then go to the grocery and buy all the seasonals that you haven't had yet. Those are some gems and while it may not be fantome those are the brewers that will keep you knee deep in beer at reasonable prices.

being a beer retailer here in the good ol state of vermont and talking with both Lawson's and Otter creek. Vermont was the only state to get true distribution of this product. it was brewed for Siptember fest. also knowing the Mass. distribution laws the guy selling this fine product is breaking the law right along with price gouging. i cannot believe that he registered the label with the state. maybe someone should voice a compaint with the Mass. DLC. just sayin.

From reading threads about whales, I'm guessing there is definitely more of that going on than you know of.

Well, if you notice in my post, I didn't kid myself. I said "...running up the price seems greedy and maybe it is..." And I also said, "An extreme example.." in creating an analogy to selling water after a disaster.

Also, yes, I have some faith that not all business owners are jerks. It truly amazes me that our current culture depicts everyone that owns a business as evil or greedy or mean or uncaring or a combination thereof. Of course, you and I would never act like that if we owned a business, but those men and women that do own them...well, they're different.

I don't think shop owners do it out of greed or for the greater good. They are just trying to find that balance. If you need a bottle limit that's kind of admitting that the price is artificially low. If they rot on the shelf bc no one buys then it's too high and they will probably adjust accordingly. I'm never concerned with how much profit someone is making in an exchange anyway. I only care that it's voluntary and beneficial to me.

Bottle limits can easily be defeated by sending in mules. Price increases can't be so easily avoided.

Given the rarity of the beer, I don' t necessarily think 9.99 is that out of line. I go to that store once in a while and they charge 7.99 for 16.9 oz of Maine Brewing Co beers that are easy to find. As you mentioned earlier, their prices are typically 1 to 2 dollars higher than the standard, although this isn't the case with all their beers. I'm guessing the beer will sell.

I have hope that if I was ever to start a bottle shop, everything that I am would make it possible to have the lowest prices ever. In a way, I would be giving everyone a great price because that is what I believe in.

Being a retailer in Massachusetts, what law has he broken? Otter Creek had distribution rights so all the owner/manager had to do was order with which ever distributor sells Otter Creek.

I never said that all business owners are jerks. I have a small selection of VERY dependably reasonable shops that I frequent. I was simply saying that implying those who price gouge for the greater good is a tad silly. And, yes, I can honestly say that if I owned a bottle shop, I would price my brews as reasonably as possible. I just don't think that doubling the typical retail is in anyway beneficial to anyone.

And as for those stating that beer pricing is artificially low...it doesn't matter if they are. If the typical retail is A, and a shop needs to add a little bit in order to survive, I'm fine with that, I really am. But doubling the typical retail is a different story. If your shop is in that much trouble, perhaps its time to move on...

Again, no reason to be snarky. If you'd looked at the title of the thread, as well as the first post, I was wondering what the etiquette was for this. Since this was my first time seeing price gouging quite this bad on something that I wanted, I figured it was better to ask than to seem like an asshole. I was actually trying to respect the shop owner by getting opinions before approaching the issue.

I wish people would just keep their pointless, sarcastic additions to the conversation to themselves...

    That's my problem to sure, I remember I could beer X or Y for $8 a sixer & now it's closer to 12...

the distributor who distributes this product does not distribute outside the state and the double dose didnt go to any other distributor. every label and beer inside said container has to be registered within the state it is being distribtuted in. the only state Doubel Dose was legally registered in is Vermont.

you could also email Lawsons and Oteer creek and ask them if it was distributed outside of vermont. i bet they have a few things to sy about that.

I guess you could buy a beer and cry...otherwise either shop elsewhere or ask why they are pricing out of line from the norm.
