    NEW OKTOBERFEST SUNDAY

Spectacular fall weather for working outside on this most glorious of NBS'! Its easy enough to break a sweat in the sun but quite chilly if you stop moving. Perfect for someone of limited motivation like myself!

    And my reward for a good days work;

    ***New American IPA Sunday!!!

Greetings to all and especially Ri0 for celebrating the day which he was born on!

Lot's of technical difficulties plagued my day(ISP) but it kind of appears that I'm back and I just reviewed another brew from The Kernel:

Yes. It is short but after 3 or so tries, I gave up on my longer version.

    Cheers to you all!

Well, I figured since it's legit autumn now, being the middle of October and all, I should indulge in the seasons offerings. Now if only I could figure out what to do with the hard squashes in my fridge...

Today has been pretty slow here in the middle of the country: Beautiful autumn day though it may be. Sunny, but cold, just the way I like it. Yesterday housed all the excitement: a ten mile bike ride to have them tell me my phone is unfixable, then five miles back to Perennial's 2nd Anniversary bash. That was quite fun. Maybe it was the copious drinks, but I felt there was some comment to be made about the neighbours being places called South City Fight Club, and Goebbels & Co. Neither here nor there, just stuck in me mind...
The anniversary was a hugely enjoyable experience. Perennial has some very talented brewers, and the cellared stuff in particular (duh) was bloody amazing. The Coffee Abraxas was the highlight for me. Just amazing blend of rich creamy chocolate, boozy raisins and thick black espresso... I need to find some way to have that enter my life again. The 2012 Abraxas was very good, if still a little hot: I am going to have to be there at Abraxas day in a couple of weeks to get a couple bottles and lay them down, because while very good fresh or at one year, the potential is there to be amazamaballs as it sits even longer. The Barrel Aged 17 Mint Stout was also top notch. I love mint as a flavour in general, and mint/chocolate I think is chocolate's highest honour. The only other experiences I've had with mint stouts have been amazing, and this was no exception. My only regret was that it was the last pour of the night, so my senses may not have been... operating at peak efficiency.
Couch those fantastic brews in the surrounding atmosphere of people enjoying themselves, great live music and a fire pit (I love me a fire...), and top fill in the edges with the quality brews available standard at the tap, and it was just what I was hoping for on this weekend of celebration.
(the only picture I managed in all the excitement)
I got the last ticket for the Coffee Abraxas. My apologies to anyone in line after me, but holy shit that stuff was rull rull tasty.
As for today, all that bike riding (20+ miles once the day was over and accounted for) helped avoid any adverse effects of last nights debauchery. That and frequent visits to the water station while trying to tackle that nefarious puzzle ball they had (shouts to Brent and Gene)...
So with no adverse effects from yesterday, and considering it's my fall break AND my birthday weekend all rolled into one, I figured the time was right to delve right into the season and get my pumpkin on. Of the three, Warlock is easily my favourite. That says as much about me, though, as it does the brews in question, as they are all high quality offerings. I just really love a good creamy stout, and this one just hits the right notes for me. Pumking is very good as well, and the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale is a well made gourd-ian of the season (man, that was hilarious) as well.

Anyway, thanks as usual for putting up with my vociferously wordy nature. One of these days I'll figure out that, "succinct" thing they keep telling me about. Cheers, all and hope the day is treating you well!

Oh, and welcome to another revolution around the sun Ri0!!

You get more in a short review than most folks get in a long one. I have a great sense of that beer. Really want some now. No Kernel for sale around here, though

Happy Birthday to Ri0! A consistent contributor who deserves a birthday on NBS. What a combo!

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/88429/?ba=mattcrill

Sam Adams Double Agent IPL smells like an IPA, tastes like an APA, and claims to be a lager.

A beer with an identity crisis but regardless, it's tasty and another fine offering from Sam Adams.

I remember listening to an interview from Jim Koch a few years back stating that SA would never brew anything hoppy b/c the market is saturated and doesn't need "another IPA" but since then they've cranked out some hoppy stuff and done a darn fine job of it. If this is his idea of not adding "another IPA" to the market then I hope he keeps it up!

    Cheers and Happy NBS everyone!!

Thanks, buddy. That Kernel has American IPAs NAILED DOWN. Excuse my shouting.
I don't think their beers are available in the US and after spending mucho time on the UK forum and reading very good things about the brewery...when I got an email from Etre Gourmet saying they started carrying them...well, I had to dive in and give them a try. They are all 330ml bottles, bottle conditioned, and have the dullest labels but man, the beers are good.

New American Pale Ale Sunday (week 452)

I admit I have a special affinity for this beer, seeing as Bale Breaker is a brewery in a hop farm, and this one didn't disappoint. Luscious, thick, and refreshing as well. Can anyone guess from whom came this Washington gem?

Had an idea this would be an artsy shot, showing the rock garden looking up and a stone cat, but the beer kinda got lost, it's called Field 41

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your hand. Cheers!

    New California Common Sunday

It's another great fall day in West MI. Temps are in the 50s with alternating blue and overcast skies.

This morning I felt like I was in a Portlandia or Seinfeld episode waiting for our breakfast table, but damn it was good. We took advantage of what is supposed to be one of the warmer/drier days of the week to get a bunch of yardwork done. After a short run, it was time for a new beer (I'm looking to start a modest beer run streak).

With little of which to compare it, I have no idea how this beer from Short's stacks up. All I know is, I thought it was pretty good.

*** NEW AMERICAN "FRESH HOP" IPA SUNDAY ***

    Greetings NBSers

Glorious sunny early fall day in the greater STL area today. Sad loss for the Rams, but eager anticipation for the Cardinals in the World Series!

As I am eagerly (read: desperately) awaiting the arrival of Founders Harvest Ale in our area, I picked up this new to me Fresh Hop IPA from Deschutes that features Amarillo hops this year:

Tasty brew overall and different than ones I've had from other breweries.

I love the fact that I absolutely love this beer, I think it's great, and yet, I've given it the second lowest score. I also noticed that Draheim entered the review just before yours, and yet didn't join in on NBS. Fucking Fun Hater!

Arctic Devil with 2beerdogs. Wow, I thought it was a great English style barleywine that leaned a bit toward American style with hops adding a little tinge at the end. Great BA barlewine.

Central Waters Brewers Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout. Very tasty beer, it isn't the best bourbon stout I have had but it is certainly up there and is definitely the smoothest. I highly recommend it to anyone that is able to get it.

Appearance- Pours thick and dark with a one finger tan head that recedes quickly but leaves nice lacing.

Smell- The smell is sweet bourbon, very pleasant. I also pick up some vanilla and a little bit of oak.

Taste- Dangerously smooth, Alcohol is hidden very well with just a little booze upon swallowing. Like the nose, strong bourbon flavor without the burn, some vanilla and roasty char in the background.

Mouthfeel- Nice body and a slick feeling in the mouth. Just slightly low on the carbonation.

Overall- Very nice bourbon stout. Extremely smooth. Smell and taste aren't very complex but they are still are great for this beer.
