Happy Sunday. I went to my closest craft beer bar here in Clemmons, North Carolina to watch my fantasy football team get beat again. They have a middle of the line craft selection and absolutely NO bmc. Very good food too. One of their special new "one off" kegs today was Ballast Point Black Eye. It's rarity was the only thing the bar tender could confirm, so I got one. It's an excellent Black IPA. But I checked on here when I got home and it's listed as American IPA and there are only 10 total hads and it's retired. This isn't a place that would get THAT rare of a beer, so I'm confused. Any one know something I'm missing here?

I could be mistaken, but I believe that a Ballast Point "Black Eye" is a blend of Black Marlin (Porter) and Big Eye (IPA)...

Correct. 33.3% porter and 66.6% IPA.

They did not have Ballast Point Porter on tap though, nor Big Eye. Only Sculpin, Smoke Screen, and Piper Down

    From the Ballast Point website:

Like dessert? You’ll love this: Black Marlin Porter with apple pie a la mode—try it! Black Marlin is a rich, dark and chocolaty Porter with a distinctive American hop character.
It is a great beer to go with hearty foods and is surprisingly one of the few beers that goes well with dessert. We also invite you to blend Black Marlin with Big Eye IPA for a treat we like to call the Black Eye.

Yup. Black Marlin-Big Eye blend. It's good, but I prefer their Black Scorpion. Of course, I also prefer Sculpin to Big Eye...

And it's possible that BP simply made the blend at the brewery and sent it out. It's kind of rare, but certainly not unheard of. And since they don't sell a proper Black IPA to confuse matters, I'd definitely put money on that.

i just had it in the same exact scenario as you today.

I thought it was VERY good! I had it with a Jack daniels burger at TGIF, their only good craft offering. I was very happy with it.

It's a blend from the brewery. I missed out on it recently in AZ, glad you enjoyed it. P.S. Sculpin da bomb yo.

I prefer big eye to sculpin

I will have to pick up a bomber of black marlin an big eye to try this blend.
