ok, so my friend I brew with always tells me I am crazy for all of my sanitizing procedures. I sanitize everything!
But, I was watching BrewDogs (that show) and they had a batch of beer fermenting that the one guy put his hat on top of it.
Tonight, my friend just called and said he was watching a new episode where one of them used their hands as a funnel to pour the yeast through to pitch the yeast. He called and said "If I see you sanitize your scissors before you cut open the Wyeast bag again, I am going to punch you in the face"
So, why do I read about how important it is to sanitize everything if the pros act this way

P.S.- he won't punch me in the face either way because I can kick his ass.

I saw him use his hands as a funnel. That's a really really bad idea. I wonder why they completely gloss over sanitation in that show? That annoys me.
Tell your friend to shut up and don't fear the foam...embrace the foam ...be the foam .... Cover everything in the foam... Then relax and have a homebrew.

Sanitizer is just a little insurance...I imagine if one were to just wash theirs hands and equipment really well and have really healthy yeast there wouldn't be all that much to worry about.

I'd still buy insurance, as the cost is minimal.

I don't think brewdog's traveling, post modern performance art homebrew freakshow is a good source of technique. I would guess that they are more concerned with making a good tv show than good beer when they are brewing the things they are making on that show.

"well brewdog didn't sanitize!" I'm sorry but this is not a valid reason to not sanitize. I have been taught to sanitize anything that the wort is going to touch after boil. Clean equipment will make clean beer. Think about all that hard work going into brewing a batch of beer just to be contaminated because you weren't careful enough. Yes, it happens. The more you can control about the yeast's environment the better.

I think it's safe to say that most of the 'pros' don't use their hands as funnels. And FWIW, I dunk my scissors in starsan solution before cutting yeast pouches open too. It's already mixed, so why not?

Well, they also boiled with the lid on in that one episode on the train... and Greg Koch was helping them that day. Of course the beer had kelp, sage (or was it rosemary?) and the world's hottest peppers in it, so maybe DMS wasn't a concern.

Didnt watch the show but I am assuming somehow using those methods create more entertainment in some way shape or form. I suppose that using proper sanitation wouldnt necessarily boost ratings for the show while doing something like that could add an entertainment value? Personally, I dont think watching others brew is particularaly fun to begin with.

Edit: Point being, I am sure it is all for more entertainment on a show about a relatively dry and boring process (to non homebrewers).

I didn't write this post to use BrewDogs method as a rule, just saying maybe I don't have to be that worried about it if professionals don't worry that much.

Try not being worried about it and see what happends. Then punch your friend in the face because your beer came out infected.

I think professionals worry about it more than you would think. They rely on non contaminated beer to pay the bills. Nothing worse than having to dump 5 gallons of beer....let alone 1000+ gallons.

Continue on being crazy sanitary. Don't take for granted bacterial free batches of beer, your doing it right.

Given the comments in this thread about this show, I shant bother watching. Promoting craft beer does not equal showing poor sanitation techniques and claiming this makes fantastic beer.

These guys sound extreme like Guy Fieri - do they fist bump and wear flame shirts too?

    Keep on sanitizing!

Having brewed some commercial batches, professions clean everything, then sanitize.

Don't believe what you see on TV. Anyone remember the Alton Brown show on Homebrewing?

The primary goal of the Brew Dogs show is entertainment. If you want to be entertained (with some brewing information inserted here and there), watch the show. If you expect to obtain a serious treatment on brewing, this is not the show for you.

    Cheers!
