    JACK'S ABBY - HOPONIUS UNION
JACK'S ABBY - MASS RISING (DOUBLE IPL)

If you don't live in Massachusetts - trade for these...or ask a trading buddy to hook you up, they aren't hard to find on shelves and they are very inexpensive.

Indeed. I regret not bringing more back from Boston. I only grabbed a few bottles to bring home. I also wish I would have gotten more bottles of their 2nd Anniversary.

Ditto, only IPL I've had (at the brewery with a local meat and cheese plate, yummy) what others are available in the Midwest/Indiana?

MASS RISING is actually the new name for 2nd Anniversary, with a new and improved flavor profile too.

i"ve only had sam adams double agent ipl. usually can get it for $7.99 a sixer, so it's a good deal and a good hoppy lager. new belgiums hoppy bock lager, available in bombers, is a good representation of a hopped up lager also.

I'd bet that the Sam Adams Double Agent is around, otherwise I have no idea unfortunately; sorry man. If you want a hoppy lager that isn't an IPL (e.g. uses "normal" German noble hops instead of the piney, fruity hops that you'd find in IPA/Ls, though honestly I don't know if that's the dividing line for the style), check out Victory Prima Pils, Three Floyds Jinx Proof, and Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold if you haven't had them.

Otherwise, trade for some Jack's Abby.

I would reach for a lager over an ale in most situations, so any "style" that's built off of a lager is cool with me. I have had and enjoyed Double Agent. Hoponius Union is fantastic.

    Yes.
Yes. had this on draft. Lots of color, flavor, but light body and low abv. I would get a case in the summer for cutting grass.

I think we should christen them "IPAs lighter brother"....sister, if you're into that PC thing.

City Steam in Hartford has a new double India Pale Lager on tap called Gerry Mulligan, I had it last night, it's very damn good.

Jack's Abby Kiwi Rising is better than 99% of double IPAs I've had.

Jack's Abby Hoponious Union and Mass Rising (2nd Anniversary) are just phenomenal.

Double Agent IPL is very respectable as well. In my opinion, it unseated Noble Pils as the best offering from Sam Adams.

I've had Hoponius and Fathom. Hoponius wins, but the Ballast Point offering is solid!

    Here we go again, eh?

This subject is gonna be another BA regular like Porter n' Stout, Celebration Ale and spices, What was your first craft beer, 3 Floyds closing... and nobody pays any real attention.

But it must be creative because they used bottom-fermenting yeast, no?

To me Double Agent is Sam Adams best non-specialty beer.

I don't dislike them in the least, but I don't know that I believe they actually offer enough to merit their own BJCP category. The overall effect is very much IPA-like in every one I've tried, which is Double Agent, Fathom and Humulus. Humulus is the best one of those three, but the distinction between it and an IPA is pretty subtle in my opinion.

There's potential to turn it into something more unique, but the problem is that the lagering process is at cross purposes with the fresh, hoppy character of IPAs.
