Hey bro, you really think Veritas 012 is a 2.75 ??? You need to be put on blast. Less than a month on the site and you are rating whales like this? You are what's wrong with this website.

I haven't had Veritas 012 so can't comment on this specific rating, but the length of time someone has been on BA has no bearing on their ability to judge the quality of a beer. My brother has only been on BA for a month but has been a serious beer nerd for years.

I think the glasses were the normal Lost Abbey tumblers that they have at the brewery. They didn't have any special logos for Barrel Night.

    Event Summary:

The bottle pick-up was prior to the event and was supposed to start at 6:00PM. The release was delayed and we waited a good 45 minutes before they started releasing bottles to the line. Tomme mentioned during his introduction that they had not done this kind of event in a while, so they were a little overwhelmed. He apologized for the "clusterfuck." They had an option for an extra bottle at $25 a person. Run to the bar, pay for the extra bottle, come back to the bottle pickup. Lots of walking and standing for the night. I didn't mind. Staff members were walking around talking shop and making sure everyone was relatively comfortable. Nice to see them adding a touch of customer service, which is rare at this level.

They had bar tables there were squished into the small brewery and had various cheeses and meats that were available, plentifully. The barrel beers were served in carafes, as to avoid having 200 people moving around the brewery to get their pour. They were not stingy with the beers, and one could have easily had multiple pours of every barreled beer if they chose. The bar was also open to their current taplist of LA/PB beers.

The night itself was a little hectic and tiring with lots of squeezing between people, but an experience in itself. They had 6 barrels that were tapped (15 minute intervals), which are mentioned a few posts above. The first five were flat, since they were directly taken directly from the barrel. The first beer was BBB, which was my favorite of the night. Peaches and honey sour, which is apparently being released next spring. A nice tart "front of the mouth fruity" sour. It was mild on the peaches. Second to fourth beers were not that great in my opinion, but i'm not a big fan of huge 12%+ strong beers. They were "interesting." Tequila barrel, Rum barrel, Whiskey barrel, respectively. The whiskey barrel Judgment Day was the best out of those three IMO. I didn't see many people drinking more than a 1oz pour of the second to fourth beers. I can elaborate on those beers if anyone cares. By this time, only about half to 3/4 of the guests remained. I think the strong beers and standing scared them away. Heh.

Back to the sours for the last two beers. Project X3, and lastly Veritas 012. Project X3 (spontaneously fermented) had the nose of grapes and was funktastic. The smell was almost rubbery. Someone mentioned that this beer went into the track set beers. It was interesting. It was a nice clear blonde.

Finally, Veritas 012. Reddish, slightly hazy beer. Nose had sweet fruitiness, DEFINITELY a lot of funk. Smell was spot on. I have not had CCK, but people were saying that it was similar (the LA description said "very similar to CCK"). The fruitiness was not overwhelmingly cherry-like, but rather a soft mix of berries (raspberry, strawberry, cherry). The taste was a little different from other fruit aged beers for me. I tasted more of the fruit in the back of my mouth and down my throat, as opposed to the tart fruitiness in the front of the mouth, if that makes any sense.

Overall, I felt that I got my money's worth at the event. Everyone was friendly, and a pleasure to be around. It could have been smoother, but organizing an event is a bitch to begin with, so my hats off to the brewery. As for Veritas 012, we will see how the bottle develops this beer and how the public receives it.

Anyone have thoughts on the beer/event?

Agreed, but when you see someone looking for tickets, not getting any, rating the limited release low, and has been on the site for less than a month, makes you wonder what his intentions are. I bet I see him post an 'ISO V012 FT Shelf Turds' soon. You can quote me on that. But let me guess, he flew in on his G6 from Cambodia because he's just gangster like that.

My mistake. Apparently my brain doesn't know what a tumbler is. I sorry.

Still wish the glass had some sort of reference to Barrel Night or a date. Still a nice Lost Abbey glass!

I think you summed it up rather well. The event was very disorganized the first hour but then they pulled together and made it work well with the carafes and staff coming around to swap out cheese plates and pass out nuts and dessert samples. The only beer I didn't care for was the Tequila barrel Agave Maria. I thought Rum Barrel Judgement Day was fantastic with the rye being pretty good as well. The blend of the two was even better. BBB was on thin side and needed more fruit character. Project X3 tasted like a great beer for blending but not something you'd want on its own. As a homebrewer I like the opportunity to try unfinished beers but I understand most people not liking them in this format.

I opened a bottle of V012 this evening and it's better than the draft we had last night. Very good carbonation with a bit more cherry character to go along with the big funkiness. Wish I had more bottles of it.

Well, for starters I was hung over this morning and reacted a little harshly. But in all seriousness, this new member from Cambodia rates Veritas 012 a 2.75. I would bet my first born that this nut ball hasn't even seen a bottle, let alone tried it and rated it. But hey, I quoted his post so he will be notified of my accusations, let's see if he has actually tried it and thinks it is an average sour, and if he does, he has no taste buds. Just sayin.

The fact that you said, without a trace of irony, "you are rating whales like this?" (as if the status of a beer should be at all tied to the ratings) is emblematic of a far more deeply entrenched problem than the occasional newbie who rates a "whale" low, IMO. And while I haven't heard anyone else say that it's an essentially below average beer, from people who I trust who've had it, the "5" ratings on there are just as suspect compared to the actual quality of the beer than the 2.75 (with the caveat, of course, that my opinion may change greatly after trying the beer).

I think you are overlooking the issue that happens with almost all of these limited releases (I use whale loosely - mostly describing a beer that isn't sold in stores or online, but by only being at events or the brewery in person). The issue is when people are looking for these bottles and actually rate the beer low in order to make the trade value more attainable. When I see a rating like this, the night after the release, and I look at their profile that says they're from Cambodia and have only been a member for 1 month, I'm sorry but red flags go flying everywhere. I know he's used to only drinking the finest breast milk, but really?
