I had a Dale's on nitro the other day and I wasn't really a fan. I like creamy stouts and porters, but "creaminess" is not something I look for in an IPA personally. To each their own though!

Casks IPAs I love, but Nitro it think hides or dilutes some of the hop flavors. To each their own.

I'll bite, since nobody else has yet.

Nitro-dispense is disgusting. It creates an artificial smoothness that isn't naturally present in any beer and dumbs down any beer by making it bland in comparison to the natural, non-nitro version.

It's only place is for ***** Guinness drinkers who can't handle a robust and hearty craft stout.

There, that should get things riled up! We haven't had a good anti/pro nitro debate in quite awhile. :grinning:

    HERETIC.
you only come around anymore when nitro is mentioned.
I remember the good old days when we could argue about nitro monthly if not weekly. sadly all things must pass.

and you neglected to mention Real Ale or CAMRA. i'm disappointed in you.

I've had the Southern Tier IPA on nitro, and I thought it was far inferior to the regular draft version. It was bland and lifeless.

What it's trying to mimic is the Cask serving style, but it can't compare.

Absolutely. Guinness was well aware that CO2 dispense led to overcarbonation and a nasty metallic tang so looked for an alternative gas to push the beer out. Nitrogen is pretty cheap and that's what they used.
Unfortunately it doesn't emulate cask. Cask enhances flavour and allows the beer to develop extra layers of complexity ; nitro simply dumbs it down and gives a strange mouthfeel with an artificial looking head. It's like listening to music with ear muffs on. Mind you, I have to admit that's what some music deserves

To each their own. I've had Hop Devil on Nitro at Victory and thought it was great.

The Birch has done Enjoy By on Nitro the last couple times it was here. I'm not a fan of Nitro in general, but I might give it a go next time we get it.

Personally, I'm on the fence with nitro beers. I think the creamy effect resulting from insoluble nitrogen enhances bold and roasty malt flavors. On the other hand, I think it masks and dulls down any hop flavors. That being said, Left Hand's nitrogen-fixed Milk Stout YES; nitro IPAs...not so much.

It doesn't enhance malty flavours it simply suppresses other flavours even more so you notice the malt. As the old school report said, "Now his handwriting has improved we can see how poor his spelling is."
I've had many, many beers in both nitro and other forms and it's the same every time. Dumb, dumber, dumbest.

Enjoy By Nitro... I can't wrap my brain around that. That beer is one of the most potent, hoppy and dank beers I have ever drank. I can only image how nullified the hop presence must be.

If it was cask conditioned Enjoy By though... Mmmmmm

I was a big fan of nitro long ago. Now? Not so much. I have never had an IPA on nitro that I liked and only one on cask that I enjoyed (Racer 5).

Reviving this thread rather than starting a new one.

I keep seeing Red Chair (basically an IPA) on nitro, and I just don't get it. If a bar has multiple other porters and stouts on deck, why waste a nitro tap on an IPA? The signature characteristic of an IPA is bitterness from the increased amount of hops. Nitro basically mutes that very characteristic.

Maybe it's just to get the people that don't like IPAs to say that they had one they actually liked... because it didn't taste like an IPA at all.

I see Boulder Hoopla APA on nitro a lot. First time I saw it I was surprised. It wasn't bad, better than from can I thought. From the cans I've had it seems to be a gusher, carbonated so much I couldn't taste the beer. From nitro it really smoothed out and I could taste a decent APA. Any American or English IPA I've had hasn't been over carbonated to the point of the Hooplas I've had so I don't see nitro benefiting them this way. I'm sure some American IPAs could at least be interesting on nitro, maybe not "better". Maybe an attempt to mimic a "cask" experience? I would be willing to try some nitro IPAs and wouldn't expect to dislike them.

Red Chair is could be either a pale ale or a lighter IPA, personally I love the beer and wish it was a summer seasonal. Anyways it was my first ever nitro and I loved it...it was so smooth and creamy and delicious..I could have drank 3..
