Short and sweet. If there's a new beer I want to try, I don't care how much it costs, I'll pay whatever it costs .... once [channeling Johnny Dangerously here]. If it's overpriced, and unless it's extraordinary, I won't buy it again but I will let someone who wants to buy me a present know. Unless of course, it's a rare or special occasion and I want to treat myself.
For my everyday enjoyment, I tend to stick to reasonably priced beers, avoid bombers and generally avoid anything over the $13 6-pack or $10 4-pack. Anybody else out there want to share their purchasing habits?

I do pretty much the same thing. if it's something I want to try I usually do regardless of cost. but for the most part I stick with sea hag at 8.99 a six pack. or something that's $10/ six or up to $9/ four pack

I think that pretty much sums up my beer purchasing habits as well.

I hate how much Orval costs but like every 4 months or so I got to have 1 or 2.

There are some notable exceptions (FBS, and more recently Dirt Wolf), but I generally buy singles and bombers. And if I like it, I'm happy to keep on buying it (IBB, Mexican Cake, Pannepot Reserva etc), even if they are a bit pricier. I tend to go for quality (subjective I know, but whatever I deem quality to be) over quantity. Everyone has a limit though - I'd draw the line on things like repeat purchases of Bruery anniversary beers

If I go until a store I'll generally walk out with a 6-pack (or 4-pack) and a bomber. I'll probably end up sharing/trading at least half the 6-pack with friends and save the bomber for a special occasion. I'm not as likely to take a chance on something over $12-13 for the pack or $10+ for the bomber and usually save those purchases for something I've been actively keeping my eyes open for.

I'm with you. As a one time purchase I will splurge on something expensive, but then probably wouldn't buy it again. I just dropped $12 on a Crooked Stave 375ml yesterday.

There's a ton of variety among "cheaper" or at least "normal" craft beer choices and sometimes you can find some overlooked gems.

I seen some buery stuff in grassroots the other day but at 18 to 24 (could have been 27) a bomber I could not go for them. all sours I think,

Each time that I've paid for something that was well overpriced the 'hurt' from the overprice cost was greater than the enjoyment from the beer (even though it was a good beer), so I have never bought a repeat of that beer. Maybe it's the tightwad in me that does that, but maybe the hype for the beer is greater than the extra cost is the real reason. :slight_frown:

I do the same. Almost all my purchase are 6 packs and 4 packs. I make exceptions for holidays and/or celebrations. If its something I've never tried I'll spend a little extra just to try it once.

This is generally my practice too, except for the "everyday enjoyment" part. I just open whatever I feel like, whenever. I'll drink a couple $15 750s on a Tuesday evening if the mood strikes me.

Also, if I enjoy it the first time and think it's worth the price (even if high), I'll buy more while it's available or make a mental note to buy more next time it's released.

I rarely buy 6-packs of anything. Celebration, Lagunitas Sucks, and annual 4-packs of Bigfoot, Narwhal, etc. but I don't often just buy a 6-pack of year-round beer.

Come to think of it, what you said really isn't my practice at all.

I'm more or less what you'd call a "price insensitive" consumer. There are times at which I'll limit the quantity I purchase, and therefore the total amount I spend, but I'll rarely choose not to buy a beer that I know I want to try because of the price tag.

Now, when it comes to repeat purchases, I'll only buy stuff that I really love. Things like Founders Breakfast Stout and Red's Rye come to mind. Or Boulevard Love Child.

It can just keep adding up. Especially if you drink a beer or two each day. I feel just like the OP here and try to buy what is economical for the majority of purchases and designate the more expensive stuff for beer I am trying for the first time.

I don't have a set price line that I won't cross, but I will only regularly buy what I consider to be a 'good value'. Sometimes that will mean a $12 fourpack (GI Sofie) or $9 750ml bottle (Rodenbach Grand Cry)- though it is usually in the lower range.

Price is never a factor for me. If it is an IPA, freshness is a factor, but in general if I want it , I buy it.

For me... what's the point of trying something once, if I know that it's too expensive to be a repeat purchase?

I stop seeing any chance for a repeat purchase with regular strength styles at $6 bomber, Imperial styles at $10 bomber, and Barrel or Sour beers at $25 bomber.

I mostly stick to six packs around $10 for normal drinking, but will occasionally splurge for some of my favorites up to the prices above.

I bought a case of Backwoods Bastard and a case of Brooklyn Chocolate Stout today.

I paid $12 for a 12oz bottle of Avery's Uncle Jacob. I am not going to go out and buy cases of it but it was worth every penny....
