While commenting on another thread, I alluded to retrading a beer and when I logged on this afternoon, I noticed my comments had been deleted. I asked a mod and he informed me that the thread had gotten derailed on the retrading topic.

Anyway, I wanted to open this thread to give anyone who had commented the chance to reiterate their opinions here and continue the discussion since I did not have the chance to read any of them before they got removed.

I personally had not ever thought about retrading as an inherently bad practice unless I were trading beers that had been extra'd to me or otherwise generously included. I searched for some old threads and saw some similar threads, but I'm genuinely curious what the BA's who commented on the other thread had to say. In the interest of clarity, the referenced situation was that I had agreed to a trade with trader A, boxes were in the mail, and while searching for threads for a particular beer I've been trying to accumulate, I noticed trader B looking for one of the beers I was receiving and I started a conversation. I agreed to terms with trader B and agreed to ship upon receipt of package from trader A.

Nothing wrong with retrading. I have offered beers for trade that I received in a trade.

Like c20percent says there is nothing wrong with it. I didn't read the other thread, so I don't know what the responses were. Just make sure you don't get carried away though. There have been cases where a trader made multiple trade arrangements with beers that were expected to be received, and for one reason or another didn't receive those beers, and their trades started to unravel like dominos.

I personally would like to have bottles in hand when finalizing trades agreements. Just me though.

I generally agree it would be better to have them in hand; however, that's a slightly different discussion along the lines of propriety of a pretrade. Your point is well taken though to not make trades of bottles not in hand a common practice since it can get complicated.

I don't think there is any problem with it as long as the person you are negotiating the new trade with knows that the bottle isn't in your possession yet. If you implied that it was in hand when it wasn't then I would see that as a problem.

Trade what you please and what's in your hand, and you can put it into a box. Until it's in your hand anything could happen, busted bottles, found by the carrier etc.

There isn't anything wrong with retrading. Once you agree on the trade, the new bottles are yours to do what you please with.

The only time I'd have a problem is flipping a really good bottle that someone gave me as an extra and getting something else.

I'm curious what others have said on the other thread regarding reasons for NOT re-trading? I cannot think of any reason.

Also, I don't do it often, but will arrange for another trade without bottles in hand, but always fully disclosed to the other BA that I am expecting to have one over a particular time frame. This isn't too different from "pre" trades or thinking that you can pickup something somewhat hard to find from a local shop. As long as the other side knows what to expect, I think it's still fair to arrange these trades.

l agree that once the bottles are in hand they are yours. But I have made trades where someone made a huge deal about how much they loved a certain beer or brewery and had to try it, etc. Only to see them immediately trying to flip the bottle(s) I sent. Again, it's their beer. If a trader uses an emotional component to a trade (my dead grandpas name is Damon or whatever) then I think it's reasonable to question seeing them retrade the bottle.

In general I believe in the "its your beer, do whatever you want with it" idea, with maybe a few exceptions. If a guy tells me he really wants a certain beer, and I actually go out of my way to get it and send it to him, I'd be bothered a little bit to see him flip it away for something else. But I'd get over it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with retrading, what you do with your property is your business. That being said, I would never retrade and extra or gifted box as that would be a middle finger to the person who sent it.

Retrading unless you are doing so in-person appears to be a huge waste of money. If you trade for a beer it should be because you want to drink it.

The subjective value of doing or having something is the entire basis for beer trading. So if it "appears" to be a waste to you, it's your decision to not do to. If someone finds it to be worth the cost, it's their decision to do it.

Regarding the motivation for trading for a beer, I would say that doing trade A to get a beer, which you never intend on drinking, because you want to auction it off for more beer is pretty low on my scale of reasons to trade. Nevertheless, it could be (and was in this case) a situation where I wanted to drink the beer from trade A at the time of making trade A, but upon seeing someone offering a beer I would want to have and drink much more, I decided I wanted to do the second trade. Your second sentence only precludes retrading if it's written "If you trade for a beer it should because you are going to drink it." Whether someone wants to drink something is always subject to change over time.

The guy who started all that was being a dink. Sure, there's some instances where someone may be insulted by you retrading a beer they sent. Extras are a big one, or if it's a friend and they really hook you up on a trade for a bottle they know you're big time ISO.

I've specifically traded for beers to trade to regular partners before. Does that make me a dick?

Nothing wrong with re-trading. I would never re-trade something I traded for without tasting it, but if I get the chance to drink what I traded for before I open my bottle (either on tap, or at a bottle share, or whatever) then I have no reservation flipping the bottle in my cellar for something else.

    I just wouldn't make a habit of it, or you'll make FedEx/UPS a lot of money

You clearly don't understand the concept of "winning trades" or "trading up." Go watch this dumbed-down show to get an idea of what trading up means:

This thread has come full circle...

It started as a result of a post in here

It then led to me creating this thread, watching that video and checking the trade history of @beerlover567, which means I need to go back and post again in the other thread. Probably safe to lock this one up now.
