From Brew Dogs episode 6 in PDX Top 5 Portland Breweries --- I do not even know what to say, so have at it 5 McMenamins Kennedy School - Portland, OR 4 Full Sail - Hood River, OR 3 Breakside Brewery - Portland, OR 2 Hopworks - Portland, OR 1 Hair of the Dog - Portland, OR.
Aside from HotD, I thought the top five breweries list was odd, after they spent the episode showing off beers from The Commons (Flemish Kiss), Crux (Doublecross), Cascade (Elderberry and Summer Gose) and Deschutes (Mirror Pond). Also, they drank Fred from the Wood, Fred and Doggie Claws 2012 with cheese at Beast.
i'm pretty sure if you look closely the kegs that made the boat were mcmenamins. I'm willing to be there was some deal made along the lines of 'hey um, donate some kegs to this thing we're making and we'll promote your choice of brew pubs as a 'top 5' destination'
LOL!!! I'm a big fan of Kennedy School, but that's flat out hilarious. Maybe they got extra points for having a warming pool on the premises?
I have taken everyone that visited me in Portland to Kennedy School... on an unrelated note, I never let them order a beer there
Yeah, I noticed that as well. I'm wondering if the list was chosen by committee, since the Brew Dog guys seemed to prefer drinking beers from other guys for the most part throughout the episode. Regardless, I thought it was an entertaining episode.
Too funny. Amusingly enough, I'm on my way down to Hood River today and none of the area's breweries I plan to visit made the list.
As well they shouldn't, since they are in Hood River Have fun at pFriem and Dbl Mountain, dont think Logsdons is open today... but Id highly recommend swinging by Parkdale for Solera as well... the view alone is worth the drive
I have big issues with that list. hotd is good but imo not 1. I'm shocked cascade didn't make the list.
I've had a little experience with unscripted tv show production, and can tell you that they capture hundreds of hours on camera to distill down to a 30 or 60 minute program. Maybe the Brewdog guys really did like those breweries best for technical reasons that don't necessarily match up with non-brewers' perceptions of a given brewery. Maybe it was a little bit of payola influencing the list like dayglo suggested. It certainly wouldn't be my list, but I can appreciate that there's almost certainly more to the decision than what was displayed on the episode.
I'm kind of surprised the list is so bad actually. I saw some of the other episodes and the picks were all pretty predictable. But then again, maybe it's a testament to how far Portland's beer scene has gone. A lot of cities only have 5 or so top tier breweries to begin with so their choices are obvious to begin with. That still doesn't explain McMenamin's though....
What about listing Dean's Scene as a top-5 beer pub in Portland?!?!? To me, that tops the list of odd recommendations. And not just for Portland, but all of the episodes so far. Dean's Scene is an odd loophole in the law that allows people to drink a commercial level homebrew for tips and smoke pot using borrowed medical marijuana cards. Sorry, but I can't believe this is the 5th most popular place to drink in Portland.
Just watched this episode and wasn't all that impressed. I know it would be impossible to visit all the brew pubs and there had to be a select number of them but sadly none of the real popular ones were in the episode. Cascade and HotD was mentioned, even belmont station was mentioned which was cool but portland has much better places than deschutes. Sure their Abyss is hell good but really IMO this show should really capture the best places and sadly IMO they didn't do that. I know it's part of the show but really I don't buy them trying to make a beer that is true of what ever city they go too. None of the beers were really an embodiment of the city but I mean really would anything be? I do think it's cool watching them do crazy over the top things to brew but really it's already getting old IMO.
about the same as any other episode - I got a good snicker out of the Portland forager lady The brunch-pairing at BEAST gets legit foodie cred points. Will be there at 10am post-HOTD 20th anniversary party...
Wow. I do not know what to say either. An episode of a show about craft beer is filmed in Portland and the following breweries and places are prominently featured on the show: Deschutes, The Commons, Crux, Cascade, Hair of the Dog, HUB, Breakside, Full Sail, McMenimans, Belmont Station, Apex, Brass Horse, Bailey's Taproom, and Dean's Scene. You've got your panties in a bind over what?
You gotta remember, the Brew Dogs are SCOTTISH, and HORNY YOUNG MEN. They make no secret of either. So the place that supplies the most freebies probably gets the nod. Otherwise, I really like the show.
