Malts: around 250 (both barley and wheat), hops around 200, yeasts around 2300

I want MOAR! (Or at least let me run #18,392,654,120 through a randal filled with gummi bears...)

I wonder what proportion of those yeasts are useless for brewing though? The yeast bank catalogues have loads of entries along the lines "like [other strain], but doesn’t flocculate".

I read it in Google translate, first into English, then into German. Having lived in Holland for 6 months (a long long time ago), it struck me again how close Dutch and German are as languages. Was it easy to communicate in German for you? Or did you prefer to go with English?

When in Germany, I'll speak German, I'm more or less fluent in both German and English. Oberpfälzer or Franconian dialects on the other hand ...... And then there is Bärndütsch .......

The Swedish translation worked quite well as well. Then again I always felt like Dutch was a blend of Swedish, English and German :stuck_out_tongue: (without the difficult German grammar).

The leading beers, Amberg, 2-3 nov. 2013
Visited on the second day, sunday 3rd. For the entry fee of € 15 you got a tasting glass and eight coupons, one for a non-alcoholic drink, one for some chocolate (!) and six for beer samples. There were various sets of beer coupons; as I was with a friend, we started out with 12 different coupons. More beers could be had for The leading beers crown corks, 1 euro each. Almost every beer (for which you did not have a coupon) would set you back one crown cork, seldom two, but we both got a few free samples as well. Serving size was 0,1 litre.
About 75 % of the breweries present were traditional breweries from the Oberpfalz and other Bavarian regions, but most of them had brought something special beside their standard offerings, including a few special brews for the festival. The other breweries were of the more experimental type (I won't use the c-word), some small independent ones, others affiliated to larger breweries. I had no problem whatsoever to find really interesting and tasty beers.
In the afternoon there were several lectures and tutored tastings. Each cost 4 euros, a bargain in most cases. For instance 4 beers with 4 cheeses, or 5 different beers from small Austrian brewers. For me this was time and money well spent, and my companion thought likewise.
The festival is intended to travel, so if there is another edition next year, it will probably not be in Amberg.

I visited Amberg in May 2013. Pretty town, but the breweries.....what a let down!
Visits to Schloderer and Kummert were a waste of time and money. The beers sucked. VERY disappointing!
I had a couple of Winkler beers (weiss, dunkel weiss, helles) at the Schiessl Wirtshaus, and they were ok. Better than Schloderer and Kummert.....
Bruckmüller's beers (enjoyed in the beer garden at the Bruckmüller Bruawirtshaus) were Amberg's best. I had the Superator Doppelbock, which was quite good, and the Kellerbier, which in my opinion was the *best beer in the city.
*I had no Sudhang beers, so this potentially not a 100% accurate statement.

Thank goodness all was not lost, because all of 7 minutes away by train is the metropolis of Sulzbach-Rosenberg. Fuchsbeck had a good weiss, and a very enjoyable Helles. I'm not so sure if they get many Ami beer tourists there, because we seemed to get more than a few stares as we spoke. But it was a fine local place to which I would love to return...... And for those who walk, keep in mind it is a pretty steep route from the train station.
Sperber Bräu is also nearby. They had a nice Weissbier, and a great Weissbierbock. Definitely a recommended stop! Good food as well!

If in Amberg, Sulzbach-Rosenberg is a more than worthy sidetrip!!

And as far as beer festivals go, at least for variety, it may be hard to beat the Fest der 100 Biere in Wolkering, outside of Regensburg. I think this past May they had around 400 different beers, all displayed for one's viewing pleasure. Find what you want, then go buy the bottle from the bar area. Quite the undertaking. Props to the organizer(s)!!! Great fest. Low key, unpretentious. Fantastic! I split 13 beers with friends, and had tastes of many many more. A tip suggested by Stahlsturm: bring glasses so you can split beers with friends. I picked up a bunch of small plastic glasses at a drink market and brought them to the fest. Great idea!

    Cheers!

While I agree that Kummert is a bit run of the mill I'm surprised you didn't like the Schloderer Dunkel which ranks pretty high in my personal taste. My fave Amberg beer is Bruckmüller Kellerbier, did you have that too ?

Agreed although the true treasure of Amberg County is Pürner in Etzelwang. Their Märzen is to die for.

I'm already looking forward to the next fest in May 2014. It'll be my 4th in a row

Wait a minute, did I read that correctly? Did Stahlsturm recommend drinking from a small glass vs. a Maß!?!

I think that I just felt a disturbance in the force!

    Prost!

I did have the Bruckmüller Kellerbier. It was great! I would have been happy drinking only that my whole time in Amberg! A fantastic bier, especially so when enjoyed in their biergarten on a warm spring day. Heaven.......
