It has zero "gots" and was last reviewed in September 2010. Is it possible that Dave is extinct outside of the HotD brewers' cellars?

Possible, but unlikely. There are countless beers that have zero Gots and haven't been reviewed in years....yet, I'd wager that some still do exist.

Personally, if I had a Dave, I certainly wouldn't be putting it on my Gots.

I am pretty sure a Dave was traded before the site went down maybe 3-4 months ago? I think the guy was looking for 3-4 Izzys for it.

I thought that ended up being fake.

Regardless, it's probably not totally extinct. What I want to know is if it's completely terrible by now, it just seems like the odds of that beer being good are lower than the odds I ever taste any.

Not extinct but certainly on the verge of extinction.

Some guys here had two bottles of it in November of last year.

Also, I think "extinct" is a bit too absolute of a word to be throwing around here.

Can we change this to "unavailable for trade"?

He traded it for Izzys. It wasn't fake, though he certainly didn't manage things well at all.

It still tasted great when I had it a couple years back. I can't imagine it's going to fall off all that quickly given the ABV - it's more like a spirit in that sense.

Yeah, but isn't it like 10 years old? It seems like it should be all oxidized and gross. I guess some people like that, but the best I've ever thought of an old non-lambic is "this isn't terrible!" Maybe Dave would be better, I dunno, and I probably never will. But I'm pretty okay with that (although I would like to see nickd have a chance to tick it).

It's well over 10 years old. I want to say that it spent almost 10 years in oak, and has been in bottles for 5 or more. 29% abv slows down oxidation quite a bit, though. I also had a 10 year old Utopias recently that tasted probably more or less the same as it did fresh. When you get into the 40+ proof range, oxidation doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

10 years don't necessarily make a non-lambic beer (borderline) gross. I have had plenty of JW Lees at that age or even older that have been nothing short of awesome.

agree with the basic idea, but it's worth pointing out that part of the beauty of j.w. lees is that it handles oxidation so well.

Fair enough, I've only ever had (relatively) fresh JW Lees, wasn't really blown away (the fact that it had EPIC amounts of gunk in it didn't help). At some point I might seek out an older one, anyone have a 1987 up for trade?

I'm also surprised by the alcohol thing, does it oxidize preferably compared to whatever else is in the beer? Maybe this is where my complete lack of OChem knowledge starts to hurt me. At any rate, I'll continue to think that Dave is probably terrible, if only because it makes it easier to accept that I'll never taste it.

That would explain why my trade negotiations with popinbottles for Veritas 007 went to shit. Wish I would've known it was the same dude.

I've had beer that's over 20 years old that was beautiful. As long as the bottle was stored properly, it should be fine.

you should stop posting right now, find an old j.w. lees, and enjoy it.

This. Finally tried an old one at the pre-DLD tasting at the Hampton (want to say it was a '93?) and I was completely blown away.

I would buy some to sit on, but I just don't have that kind of patience.
