Just wondering if any of you guys on here prefer your stouts not barrel aged.

I'm fairly new to Craft and BA Stouts in particular but so far i think i prefer my stouts as is. I find that what i like about a stout gets taken away or mellowed out by barrel aging. Anyone else find this?

Granted, it is a new area to me and i have come to many such conclusions about other styles only to try them later and find i am completely wrong.

    What about you guys?

I enjoy both, it just depends on what mood I am in.

I like both. There are shitty BA stouts and shitty Non BA stouts. There are also fantastic examples of both. While it may be either/or for you right now, I don't find it to be that way at all. But sometimes certain beer styles just aren't for some people or it may just take some time.

I sometimes prefer stouts not barrel aged. They can be overrated and sometimes I prefer the base stout flavor to what the barrel does to the beer.

a barrel aged stout is sort of like buying bourbon but it doesn't have the same ABV even though it has quadruple or more the calories. complete waste money, time, and taste imo.

I don't like the heavy coffee flavor that's commonly found in stouts, so I prefer them barrel-aged.

And I don't see how you can call Parabola or BCBS a waste of money, time and taste. They are very special beers.

I usually prefer non barrel aged stouts but I've gotten to where I don't mind one as longs as it's not a total bourbon, oak or whatever else bomb.

Same here. Most of the bourbon barrel aged stuff I've tried is a one and done for me. More BCBS for the rest of you guys.

I really enjoy getting to try a stout alongside its barrel aged counterpart. When I've done this in the past, it has been a very rare occasion that I prefer the Non-BA to the BA.

    Definite barrel fan here.

I prefer Non BA stouts, can drink them and still be somewhat useful afterwards

Absolutely. But gotta have 'em thick and black tho. Ten Fidy, GI Big John & Night Stalker and HF DORIS are among favorites.

I like them both, but specially when the BA has been aged for about 2 years

I honestly don't think bourbon/whiskey mixes well with stouts, so it's not a style I enjoy at all. There are those that do it better than others that I can enjoy, but to me the bourbon just masks the roasty, chocolate, coffee, etc. flavors of the big stouts that I like.
