Drinking Whales

    Based on the ludicrous amount of rare beer people are trading for, hoarding, standing in line for my question is three fold:

    Do you ever drink these beers?
    When do you drink these beers?
    Do you need a special occasion to crack open a rare beer?

    Last Sunday I cracked open a 2007 Abyss for the hell of it and drank it by myself because to hell with it, why acquire all this ridiculous beer if I'm not going to enjoy it.

    That said I understand holding on to a beer for some elusive special occasion, so basically what would it take for you to crack open a King Henry, BA Dark Lord, CBS, Great, Prairie/Pirate Bomb, Hunahpu, etc?

    Special occasions. Friend in town, someone's getting married or having kids, got a promotion, etc. I'll also do it on lesser whales if I'm feeling lousy due to a breakup or a shitty week at work. I'll just come home and think "Screw it, I'm having a KBS."

    A friend of mine just told me his wife is pregnant and I'll definitely be opening up a Black Tuesday for that. It WAS going to be a growler of Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, but I reconsidered.

    Are you stupid or something? Beers aren't for drinking, they are for admiring and stashing away so you always have something to look at to know your that much better than everyone else.

    I wish I had a single rare or aged stout but I don't......yet

    When I do eventually get one, it will be a special occasion beer shared with friends or family who would appreciate it.

    I share them with my close friends, often as a part of a larger informal tasting event.

    I cracked my King Henry on a random Thursday a couple months after I acquired it.
    I cracked my Hunapuh when my friends who gave me the beer came over to hang out.

    I don't buy or trade for very many rarities, but when i get them, I see no reason to hang onto them for extended periods of time.

    Once you get started, you won't stop. It took me years before I did my first trade, but within 6-8 months I had my own little mini whale hoard. I just couldn't stop shipping boxes out and waiting for my sweet sweet returns.

    I drink everything I get. If I acquire another one after I already tried it then I would trade it to try and get something else that I haven't tried before.

    True story, I've built up quite an arsenal in a short time of trading. Maybe a month or so ago I went over to a friends house and we cracked open a fresh Pliny, Heady, then drank a Supplication, and a '09 KBS just for the fuck of it. Best beer day ever.

    3. Sure -- the weekend.
    No point in taking part in all this if you're not going to drink and enjoy the beer.
