How come Triple IPA isn't a listed style on BA?

I'm not arguing that it should be - I genuinely don't know enough about the label. Based a quick forum search, I get the sense that it is just a commercial designation that misrepresents the fact that so-called Triple IPAs are only a smidgen more IPA-esque... But I don't know

BTW, the question comes up because I had a Green Bullet yesterday, from Green Flash Brewing, and I really enjoyed it. It's labeled as a Triple IPA, but is listed on here as a DIPA.

Simtra from Knee Deep is labeled as a Triple IPA too. It's one of the best IPAs that I've had recently as well. Fantastic and huge in every way.

Pretty sure it's just a marketing thing. Of all the "triple IPAs" I have tried, I can't think of any major difference compared to a great fresh DIPA (Dreadnaught and Hopslam come to mind).

Because the DIPA style is open-ended.

    Because it's a bullshit, made-up style.

I don't think something like Knee Deep's Simtra would be confused with an American barleywine unless it had a lot of age on it...

I don’t think we need to create some kind of pointless sub-style when PA/IPA/DIPA is plenty. The only reason we're even having this discussion is because there's a numerical reference.
“If there’s a double, clearly there can be a triple!” seems to be the mantra for a lot of people.
If it had a different name like “Hop Wine” or something to that effect nobody would even give it a second thought.

Thought I read a while back that they were trying to do a quadruple IPA as well. If it's half as good as fresh Simtra, what a swift kick in the ass that'll be!

Founders Devil Dancer is another "TriPA"... man, that beer is strange. Not BAD, but... if you see it, try it.

TriPA's are close to Barleywines a lot of the time, if you've had any before. It's just that they tend to be more like American Barleywines, and not English Barleywines.

Yeah, I think it was called Hopoholic. Never got a chance to try it... but certainly wouldn't pass it up!

Does Houblon Chouffe meet this category because it's a tripel and an IPA and it's friggin' awesome. (Oh pardon me.)

From BA's description of an American Barleywine:

From BA's description of a Double IPA (since there is no Triple):

So, Mr. Wisdom of all beerdom, please explain to me the difference between a "TRIPLE IPA" (& many "double" IPAs), & an American Barleywine.

Thicker body, darker color, more caramel and specialty malts, and lower attenuation are what differentiates an IPA from an American Barleywine. The characteristics of a pale ale are light color, light to medium body, and dry. A barleywine is darker in color, medium to heavy body, with more residual sugars.

Just because both styles are heavily hopped doesn't make them the same style. Further, just because a brewery labels something a "Triple IPA" doesn't mean that what they are making is an IPA at all. Focus on what is in the bottle, rather than what is on the label, when deciding what style a beer actually is. The label is there to sell the beer more than it is to inform you what style the beer is.

I'd never buy it again at the price that it costs, so it is in that aspect.

I've had MANY "Double/Triple" IPAs that were either (1) copper to hazelnut in color, (2) heavily comprised of crystal/caramel malts, (3) had very low attenuation & high sweetness overall, & (4) incredibly thick, sticky, mouth coating bodies.

I've also had plenty of Barleywines that were "lighter" & hoppier than many of these said D/TIPAs.

If you'd like me to provide a list, I'd be more than happy to do so. Truth is, the line of D/TIPA & American Barleywine can be as blurred as the fabled Stout/Porter line.
