Why has no one pointed out that they taste just fine 1 day after the deadline? Actually, they taste fine 6 weeks after the deadline. Why isn't this on the news?

they don't taste the same at 10 weeks old and that's the whole point. Yes they taste the same over the course of 2 days, but not two weeks.

I've opened the same Enjoy By at purchase, at the deadline date, the next day, and 6 weeks later and they all taste the same.

I would have to disagree. I am lucky enough to live close to the brewery and have had the pleasure of drinking bottles 1 or 2 days old then drinking the same release weeks later and I notice a difference. Not a crazy amount of difference like sculpin but not that same punch, or wow factor, but that just might be me. Good news is drink your enjoys wheneva you want if it all tastes the same to you.

I would be happy with an old enjoy than 80% of the old IPAs on the shelf now.

That shows how hop forward this beer is and how the malts take a back seat. My kinda of ipa! Drink an old heady and the hops still shine!

There's a reason behind the concept, and it's fresh. This brew 2 months old isn't what the brewer brewed and labored for. The fresher the better, and yes it's drinkable, past the date, but Stone wasn't shooting for mediocre drinkable, props to them for putting it out there. A HR IMO.

Always been curious about this. But what I really want to know is the science on the exact date. I'm guessing it's not really a huge deal and they just choose dates based on what sounds cool, etc 12-21-12 or 11-12-13 but I honestly wonder if like they brew it so if it's drank a day late than something happens inside the beer itself that makes it (not as fresh) or maybe I'm just an idiot. Cuz they sell 10-25 where I'm at and it still taste 99% the same.

If you don't drink this beer by the enjoy by date it will explode

From my understanding Greg chooses most of the dates  And nothing happens to the beer if you dont drink it by its enjoy by date. You could drink one 2 years from now if you wanted to be silly and waste the beer, it just wouldn't taste all that fantastic anymore!

It's marketing! Yup, thats right... marketing isn't just for the big guys anymore. Granted, there's more of an educational aspect (teaching stores, bars, consumers to serve/drink IPAs fresh) than the typical hot chicks and cold beer marketing of BMC, but it's still a marketing gimmick nonetheless.

Not really diggin Enjoy By anymore. 2/15/13 was one of the best IPAs I have ever had. Absolutely fantastic! Piney, almost thin mouthfeel, not terribly boozey. Very well done.

All the rest (9/13 and 10/25) have been too sweet, more mouthfeel and thus the hops are muted. Poo

And since changing the recipe (adding more ABV) to Ruination I will not be buying that anymore either.

I too did not enjoy the latest "Enjoy By" as much as previous versions...and for a beer that used to sell out almost immediately, I find it very telling that they're still sitting on the shelves around town. Maybe I'm not the only one who didn't think this batch was as 'enjoyable' as previous versions.

But.... that doesn't mean I wont be first in line for the first release in 2014!

I think it is simple. It's meant to be drank as fresh as possible. So drink it fresh!

Just like Pliny, its meant to be drank now...

    1. I'm a huge advocate of the whipping-my-ass-over-how-it-MUST-be-fresh people to go to hell because I've tried numerous hoppy brews at 3+ months old, and they taste great. Fantastic, even. Beer does not die 1 day after it is bottled, nor 1 week nor 1 month, etc.

    2. Enjoy By scores 100 fresh but only about 85 after 4 weeks. I hate admitting it, but from my perch, that was the case. The Enjoy By I tried within 1-2 weeks of bottling was among the best beer experiences I've had. The Enjoy By I tried 4 weeks old? No pop, no crazy sweet grapefruit explosion, just another good DIPA. Granted, it was good, but it wasn't the same.

The date staring you in the face in huge bold font couldn't possibly have an effect on your perception of the beer as the date you are looking at becomes closer and closer. Or that's 99% of what is happening....one of the two.
