Jokes are, by definition, funny.

All kidding aside, I think if you re-read your original post, it comes across that your original intent was just to know what "whalez" exist so you can trade them. Which, to me, is fine, whether you want it to drink or trade, because lots of us on here trade, and just because we do it with "regular trading partners" doesn't make us any less culpable for the state of beer in this state today.

So to answer your actual question (which almost no one has), the beers that trade best tend to be sours and BA stouts, because thats whats hot across all markets right now. Unfortunately we don't produce a lot of the latter, so Jester King seems to be the "go to" that people look for in trades.

That doesn't mean there aren't a lot of great beers being produced in this state right now, but some of the best aren't bottled or canned. Hops & Grain Zoe, Austin Beerworks Einhorn and Sputnik, Real Ale Mysterium Verum, lots of the stuff from Pinthouse Pizza and Black Star Co-Op are all excellent beers, but don't have the whalez hype to them. But I'd drink them every day and be a happy man.

My regular partners are my friends. I travel quite frequently so I have hung out/ stayed with most of them. I view trading with them as if I was buying them a few rounds. I've seen what Atrial goes for, but I'd seriously rather give it to a trade partner for Pliny. Sure I may miss out on the beer of the moment/week/day, but that's not what it's about to ME.

Do I fault people for trading their beer for what they want in the open market? Nope. Do I think I'm better than others who do not share my philosophy? Not one bit. Find what works best for you and do that.

I'm pretty much the same. I have 2-3 regular friends I trade with, and we rarely talk value. I sent one guy the new JK sours for *gasp* nothing! Zero fucks given. I know he'll hook me up with good stuff in the future, so it all works out. Sure I could have ransomed them for something, but who cares? That's the best kind of trading, at least for me.

I'd definitely agree that the JK sours are the closest Texas has to whales. I traded AL and NC for a Flora Satsuma. Pumpkinator is certainly another one I'd say is up there that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Werd. I don't know that either of those is actually brewed in TX. I know Frio isn't.

I'll believe it when I see it. I had offered a few AR up in that trade too, when the AL and NC were accounted for no one was willing to offer the Satsuma. Satsuma was a single release of 300 12 ounce bottles. All it takes to get AR is to drive to the brewery and pick up a bottle any weekend in the past month+. That doesn't sound 1:1 worthy to me.

Oh, are we talking about trading Texas beers for out of state stuff? Don't do that, Texas makes all the beer you could ever want, right? :wink:Want that Almanac Pumpkin beer, we have Pumpkinator. Want Russian River sours? Jester King makes Aurelian Lure and Nocturn...unless you had a mobile device and got fucked :stuck_out_tongue: Seriously whales are a dying breed, just ask Hayden Panettiere. No whales here. I can't think of many whales out of state either.

Funny you say that. I started a thread in the southwest forum wishing everyone a happy thanksgiving, be safe and be on the lookout for DPS. It got moved to the what are you having thread. I don't give a fuck about those people in the beer talk forum! But miraculously a trade tips thread fucking survived for 4-5days. Hell it might still be in this forum.
