A beer came out the same year I started law school in Northern California where I was just a few short miles from the brewery. (As I recall, it was more of a "brewing place" than a real brewery when it started up again). It was very cool, very hip and very chic to drink this new "craft beer" even though the brewery had originally brewed beer in the late 1800's.

Yep, . . . . the "cool kids" in those days drank a beer called "Anchor Steam;" it was the newest and "the rage," at least in Northern California. (Still not a bad beer although it gets little attention these days).

stealing empty kegs from the backs of restaurants, getting $20 for each and buying a case of 16oz genesse cream ale in those huge "head knocker" super thick returnable bottles. man was it shite. knew it even at the time.

Beers perceived as whales didn't seem to be as prevalent as they are today. We relied more on good honest beers as purists. Also, it wasn't as difficult to keep up with all of the brewers, styles, releases, etc.. But then again, I guess I could blame that on age too. :astonished:

I'm almost* as old as you guys, and (tho' my memory can be off----) I certainly don't remember such a time. I do remember, even after the original brewery (RIP) closed, finding these in my beer fridge for the first couple of decades of "craft beer" era.

In fact, I remember very few imported IPA's at the time. Labatt in Canada still made one (as did their subsidiary Alexander Keith's) but it hadn't been exported to the US in years. Bass' US label did sport a tiny "IPA" for a time in the '80s, but not many other UK IPAs here either.

*could be a few more years, could be a couple less
    - why quibble over a few years.

yea I know but in that case I think we was talking wc ipa verus UK. Where I lived good old ballantine was rare as hell. I was thinking what was in bars versus liquor stores. Besides I was in the navy riding the waves, my version is slightly distorted. as we discussed in an email before...if you remember?

import selection in the NE and the WC was totally different.

Shiner Brewing started distributing to Chicago around 2005 and I remember the Bourbon County was sitting right next to it. That ShinerBock was flying off the floor and Goose Island's heralded stout sat dormant collecting dust.

When I joined, I thought the only great beers were ever brewed in Bavaria or the UK. Great beer in America? Belgium? No way.

I've learned a lot in the last 5 or 6 years. Old dogs and their old taste buds CAN learn new tricks.

That is so funny. I had the exact same hankering. One too many Winter Warmers this long weekend led me to try something different. Ended up having a Silver City Winter Bock. Not bad......took care of the need.

I remember buying a single of KBS about 6 years ago on the advice of the beer manager. I coulda bought more. The one I bought sat around for a few months.

Then one fine day, I drank that little KBS...and after I picked my brains off the wall, I happily went out to anxiously buy a whole bunch more. Yum! Can't wait! But it was all gone. All gone. To this day I personally haven't seen it on a shelf again.

Well, I only go back 10 years or so, but I remember when people liked Rogue.

I can't believe how much hate they receive on here.
