I had a thread about this on the old site, but I figured with the trip coming up I would start a new thread and ask for suggestions/advice on my upcoming road trip from the bay area down to San Diego. My biggest concern with the trip is that I'm unknowingly being too aggressive with it (i.e. trying to hit too many breweries, squeeze too much in to one week, etc.). Any and all help and advice is much appreciated, especially timing warnings ("this 20 mile stretch will really take you an hour", that kind of thing). Another thing in particular that would be helpful to know would be if any of the breweries we would like to tour would require us to book it ahead of time or if we can just join in a public tour. Side note - the detour over to Bakersfield is to visit a friend out there, in case you were wondering why we'd bother.

Also, if there are any glaring omissions of places we need to hit, please feel free to chime in!

    Here's the tentative itinerary:

    Sat Jun 30:
    • 11 a.m. - Lunch/Tour at Russian River Brewing
    • 4:30 p.m. - Dinner at Lagunitas
    • 8 p.m. - Brews at Toronado SF
    Sun Jul 1:
    • 11 a.m. - Pre-game at the Public House @ AT&T Park
    • 1:05 p.m. - Reds @ Giants
    Mon Jul 2:
    • 1 p.m. - Tour @ Anchor Brewing Co.
    • 7:05 p.m. - Red Sox @ A's
    Tue Jul 3:
    • 11:30 a.m. - Tour @ Firestone Walker Brewing
    • 12:30 p.m. - Lunch @ Firestone Walker Taproom and Restaurant (if open by then...)
    • 6 p.m. - Dinner in Bakersfield
    Wed Jul 4:
    • 6:10 p.m. - Reds @ Dodgers
    Thu Jul 5:
    • 1 p.m. - Lunch @ Hollingshead's
    • 4 p.m. - Tour/Tasting Room @ The Bruery
    • 7:05 p.m. - Orioles @ Angels
    • 10:30 p.m. - Post-game @ Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach
    Fri Jul 6:
    • 12 p.m. Lunch/Tours @ Stone Brewing Co., The Lost Abbey, Alesmith
    • 5:30 p.m. - Dinner in San Diego
    • 8 p.m. - Beer Tasting...?
    Sat Jul 7:
    • 11 a.m. - Lunch @ Alpine Beer Co.
    • 4 p.m. - Tour @ USS Midway/Coronado Island
    • 7:05 p.m. - Reds @ Padres

Russian river doesn't do tours, and personally I think a 7 pm A's game followed by getting to fw at 1130 is a tad ambitious, but otherwise that all seems reasonable. Did you already book your tour at anchor?

Russian River doesn't do 'tours' at their pub normally, and I'm not sure if they do them at their off site brewery to the public. A friend and I got a tour, but he works at a beer store.

And unless you made reservations in advance for Anchor, you may not get in. They usually have a 2-3 month wait period last I heard.

The rest of your trip seems fine to me.

Yep, tour at Anchor is already booked! We will be staying in Santa Clara while we're in the Bay Area, not sure how much more feasible that makes the drive to Paso Robles.

I'm used to being fairly hammered after baseball games and not wanting to get up early the next day, but if youre already driving back to santa clara after the game you'll be fine.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, there's two of us that are going on the trip, so we've decided one of us needs to be sober enough to drive at all times. My guess is it will be me after baseball games, and my friend after brewery visits. He likes good beer, but he won't go crazy about it like I will. :grinning:

Yup, looks fairly reasonable. Tip: For the Stone tour, call in a reservation for 12pm. Get there at 11:50, pick up your 2pm tour tickets, go eat and drink for a couple hours, then go on the tour. And don't drink too much because they give you free tasters on the tour.

Also, Alesmith usually has food trucks on Fridays, so you can probably just eat there.

One other thing I'd suggest is trying to fit in a drink/meal at Magnolia.

Agreed with Funky. SF to Paso is a fairly long drive especially to get down there so early. Everything else looks good to me as well. Make sure you take an extra day off when you get back because damn your going to be tired.

Cool, looks like it may be a good candidate for after the Giants game.

    • 4 p.m. - Tour/Tasting Room @ The Bruery

This will take 30 seconds. You will have pleanty of time to drink. Walk in. Look Right tables, Look left Fermenters and brewing equipment. Staight ahead, bar with Taps.

Sat Jul 7:11 a.m. - Lunch @ Alpine Beer Co.
    4 p.m. - Tour @ USS Midway/Coronado Island

Be careful here. The San Diego freeways can get pretty backed up especially after 4th of July and summer time. Alpine is in the Boonies. Midway is WAY downtown and parking is a bitch. You have to cross the bridge to get across to Coronado so thats a pain as well.

    Cheers!

For Thursday the 5th, the Bruery Tasting room won't be open. I have heard that they will be expanding hours there but for now they are only open Fri-Sun (Keep an eye on their website as this could change in the next month or two). Bootlegger's though does open at 4 on Thursdays, no tour as you are pretty much in the middle of their brewery at the tasting room but you can enjoy some beers.

Great itinerary (love all the baseball) and it looks like you've gotten a bunch of great advice. The only things I can add are about this:

I'm not sure if there are non-beer related items on your schedule, or lots of driving, but if you're looking for stuff in LA there's actually plenty these days. Eagle Rock Brewery is close to dodger stadium and their beers are totally decent to good. they open at 4 on wednesdays. Sunset Beer Co is a long home run away from dodger stadium and has a fair amount of bottles and a few taps, and is a pretty cool place. plus wednesdays they don't charge a corkage fee so you can open anything you buy there without the small fee. There are also some good bars nearby, Far Bar, the Verdugo, and Mohawk Bend. And a little farther away (though still within a 5-10 minute drive) is Golden Road Brewing, whose brews are solid.

Well, we'll be driving down from Bakersfield on the morning of the 4th, probably after a night of heavy drinking with our friend in Bakersfield (he's more of a "let's pound some Miller Lite" kind of guy  ), so I didn't want to plan anything for that morning. Additionally, I wasn't sure what might/might not be open for the holiday. But thanks for all the awesome suggestions! Hopefully we'll be able to hit one of the places you've mentioned!

I know I've chimed in enough on the subject but maybe I can put some misspelled words for you to attack.

Alpine to the Midway is like a 40 minute drive, give yourself an hour so you have plenty of time to find parking/traffic and whatever.

I'm extremely glad you decided to do lunch at Hollingshead's, that's a packed day, pace yourself better then DLD.

Anyone else down for a bottle share Friday night? If not, I will host you and your buddy at my place Mark. If other BA's want to jump in we may need a little bigger place to do it. Nano and crew you guys in on this?

Getting a table at Hollingshead's for lunch mid-week is a task. Tons of people from CHOC and surrounding businesses come in there from 11:30-2. Also, you do not want to be anywhere around the 55, 57, 91, or 5 freeways during rush hour (the drive from The Bruery to The Big A). I would personally consider flip-flopping your Bruery and Hollingshead's times. Hollingshead's will be much more accommodating of a small group in the later hours of the afternoon, and you can take side streets from there to Angel Stadium... I have even made that walk before. This may create a problem with getting "Lunch", but you could always do Bruery for drinks, then a place like "The Catch in Anaheim" for a true Lunch/beer, then Hollingshead's for more beer and a final snack or sandwich before the game.

Sounds like an awesome trip. I'll gladly buy you a beer if I run into you around Orange County
