Have not had BCBW, but Sucaba might have been the greatest thing I have ever consumed....

I may go a buy a Sucaba now just to try this side-by-side tasting. Sucabas just sit on the shelf of one of the beer stores near me....

I agree. And right now I prefer Sucaba slightly to BCBW. Also when I do my side by side I have to remember 2013 Sucaba is almost turning a year old. Shouldn't matter too much, but it was outstanding fresh. Maybe I can do another with the 2014 vintage since that is just a month or two away from release.

Either way it should be an outstanding competition. Enjoy the show down.

Agreed on all points. They're doing great things up there in Amherst.

That reason is actually why I passed on the BC Barley Wine. I had it a a GI event a few months ago, and while awesome, I just kept thinking to myself how I liked the CW just as much.

When it came time to buy BCS this year. I put the the BW money towards another coffee instead, and will just buy a few CW when it's realized.

well the fact that bcbbw is blended and not aged in wine barrels also makes it a littledifferent. im assuming sucaba would win though

Didn't do it side by side but had them within a week of each other and I though BCBBW killed '13 Sucaba. I also think '12 sucaba blows '13 away so I will be trying '12 Sucaba and BCBBW side by side.

Curious as to how hot BCBW is fresh.

Not at all IMO. No big alcohol kick.

BCBW is going to get crap because it's the new kid on the block as can be seen by this board, but IMO it kicks the crap out of sucaba and every other barleywine I've ever tasted, hands down.

It's really good but I think it will actually improve with a little age. There is some alcohol heat, not as much as say the BCS but I thought more so than fresh Sucaba. And to others saying it kills Sucaba, no it doesn't, or vice versa. Simply different animals.

BCBW better in my opinion, but deciding between the two is great problem to have.

I was extremely unimpressed with CW BBBW and the BBS. They were extra's in a trade a year ago and I was really looking forward to them...then I drank them. Have since had the CW BB Scotch Ale and thought it was very good.

So anyways unless it was a fluke, I think CW BBBW is no where near Sucaba and GI BCBW. Cheers!

Drank my 1!!! bottle of BCBW a few days ago and drinking the bottle of Sucaba I got in a trade at this very moment. Gotta say that while both world class beers, I would choose BCBW over Sucaba if given the choice. Their really is something to aging a beer in spent BA Stout barrels. The spent Black Note barrel aged Third Coast Old Ale at Bell's roll out the barrel party was very similar to BCBW. Founders should get on the train and do a spent KBS barrel aged Old Curmudgeon, how 'bout it!

The snobiest snob that I personally know says BCBW is almost, repeat almost, as good as King Henry. Having had KH I can't wait to pop one of my two precious BCBWs.

IMHO the central waters beers do not really stack up and are on the next tier down. Lack of body really kills them for me. They're tasty but not world class, again IMO. Also BCBW is no king Henry but it's excellent .

As someone who has become slightly obsessed with BA barleywines I think there are numerous stellar examples. MOAS is great, arctic devil a notch below. Cognac church anyone?

Here's a sleeper: steel toe lunker. Fantastic.
