What are these pulling down these days? Would like to get one but wouldn't want to trade the world for it.

I havent seen any trade for it recently, but 300(or 360 i forget) bottle count and delicious leads me to believe very highly, i have two and it would take a lot to get them out of me.

Not nearly as much as much as if they'd called it Bourbon County Oatmeal Stout....

I preferred Cthulhu to all variants of bcbs too, except it ties with rare imo. Its quite good

But if it was BCBOS there'd 400x as many bottles ... so supply and demand *might* trump hype and lower the trade value. But I've underestimated the power of hype in the past.

I guess I was implying all other things equal (bottle count, beer itself, release strategy) the value would be much higher based on the BCBS name alone.

somewhere in between. I dont think theres an actual trade value for it because its so low bottle count and not alot of trades since intial release, as well as probably only being half the original number of bottle left. I would probably only entertain crazy offers though personally, go to the trade forums and try it out though

True. The "Bourbon County" brand is valuable. But it brings up an interesting point - how does GI choose when to use it and when not? When you have a valuable brand like that, you can't start slapping it on everything or it looses its mystique. Over time they can't end up with 15 variants.

But that's off topic! Carry on.

Cthulhu is GI Brewpubs; BCBS is GI proper. Likely, there are trademark issues with the Bourbon County name. Technically, the breweries are Lincoln Park Brewery and Fulton St. Brewing, respectively (or something close).

Even if there weren't issues, Cthullhu is an imperial oatmeal stout, vs. imperial stout. So, why mistake one for the other.

I don't think anyone is mistaking one for the other. They've already extended the brand to a barleywine, so there's no reason they couldn't extend the Bourbon County Brand to an oatmeal stout, is there? Barleywine isn't an imperial stout either.

Your point about the difference between the entities - brewpubs versus GI proper - is more relevant. Trademark ownership would likely keep brewpubs from pumping our variants assuming they wanted too - which is doubtful.

Even though ive never had it, I don't see the point of trading crazy stuff for this beer while bcbs exists.

to be fair, you're talking about a very different style of beer here. cthulhu is fairly low ABV for a BA stout. it's really far more analagous to velvet merkin than is parabola. velvet merkin is great, but cthulhu is better. however, would i trade for a cthulhu given its current trade value? fuck no.

edit: OP, save your cellar and just trade for (or buy if available) more velvet merkin.

The point is its a different beer, and imo better than rare. All opinion of course, but its freaking awesome and superior to bcbs

I thought I was ok with skipping this one, but it just went from tied to rare to better than rare in a day.

Rare is awesome - about as awesome as bcbs.

You're right, rare is about as awesome as bcbs, but probably not quite there. Also why are you tslking about a beer you haven't had? there's a fine line between equal and better, i would prefer cthulhu to rare even though they are equal quality imo. Sorry wagon circler I clearly have no clue, ill try to be on your level one day...

Had three in our tasting group. Traded 1 for a cherry rye. Drank 1 and will probably hold onto the third for a little while. It is delicious.

Really its not worth anything anyone would ask for it. Its basically somewhere between Merkin and Parabola. You might as well just do a cuvée de FSW at that point.

Sent one out for a Cali Brandy Huna + Darkness '11 + BCBCS '12 right after the release, I intend to drink my other one during my bachelor party but I've seen it being held for ransom by a few people in the trade forums.

The GI Brewpubs have nothing to do with Goose Island outside of the name. When they sold to InBev, they did not sell the 2 brewpubs (One in Lincoln Park, the other in Wrigleyville), but they worked out a deal to still be able to use the Goose name.

They are completely independent of Goose Island Brewing company.
