I definitely feel like lagers are underrepresented. I will be cracking a few today in honor of National Lager Day (yeah, it's silly to have a day for everything, but whatever, lagers deserve some promotion, moreso than IPA Day...)

I just might have to celebrate by drinking my Bourbon Barrel Aged Framinghammer tonight.

Is this really Craft Lager day? Stan at Appellation Beer writes:
With that A-B connection I smell the marketing BS in tow. Nonetheless, I have a few leftover Oktoberfests from the past season, so I think a nice Sprecher ought to hit the spot.

I think the Landbier (Country Beer) is just what that blogger is celebrating with. I believe the "day" is supposed to be for any and all lager.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. The blogger is celebrating lager day with a landbier, which is a lager, and so, in the process, he's also celebrating landbier. Perhaps the title of the post should have been: "Celebrating Lager Day with a Landbier." Whatever, I'm just psyched to have learned a bout a new kind of beer.

Well, Landbier isn't necessarily new and it isn't necessarily a new style. It's usually a "house" beer of whatever brewery is selling it. Often times it's a more fresh version of the brewery's every day beer -- which sort of screws the dynamic for imported beers.

Here's a good article by Ron Pattinson with some embedded info on Landbier:

    from the article:

"craft beer enthusiasts sometimes confuse IBU levels and high-octane ABV with quality."

    yes. yes, they do.

the made-up holiday is stupid, but the lager is not. at the risk of getting lynched on site, I will freely admit I'll take a good pilsener over *ANY* american IPA/DIPA every time. the big american hop beers are awesome, but for me, the good Czech and German pilsener are awesomer.

(let the record show that I do drink and enjoy both, all you whole-cone, citra and heady topper heads -- love you guys and your beer, too!)

I love a good lager. But IMO, if I could change this "lager day" to a day during the warmer months, perhaps May is a good month, then I would be more enthusiastic. I consume more lager/pils during the warm spring/summer months than I do during the winter. It is cold here in Northeast China, it's even snowing right now! I don't feel like drinking a crisp lager, I feel like drinking a strong barley wine.

As a homebrewer, I can appreciate what goes into a lager...much more labor intensive than most ales, but like sours not usually worth all the time and hassle as my palate seems to prefer ales for everyday drinking.

    My feelings exactly!

I had no idea about this "holiday" but I did have a craving for a Lager today, so I drank two with dinner. If you must know, an SA Boston Lager and a Winter Lager...I picked up the winter variety pack recently.

I didn't know about this national day of commemoration (though I approve of it, just as I approve of the days that nationally commemorate pie, good vibes, and well-behaved children), so I didn't prep.

Checking the fridge I find I've got some Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils, a Dogfish Head Piercing Pils, a Jack's Abby Jabbybrau, a Jack's Abby BA Framinghammer, and a bunch of cans of Notch Session Pils.

Who knew I drank so much lager? And here I've been thinking of myself as more the ale-oriented type. National Lager Day has much to teach us. Thanks National Lager Day!

It may not be its own style, but the Veldensteiner Landbier is still quite nice- and it's available in NY:

Hopefully you get to enjoy it some day.

I love lagers and I drink plenty of them, but usually not in December! Its 15 degrees here in Chicago and a lager is the last thing I want to drink tonight. Why isn't this in July?!

Nicer still is the Landbier mentioned in the blog consumed at that Inn in that town in Austria. The location makes the beer a totally memorable beverage.
