Ha! If you could actually "minus the obvious" from Goose you'd be getting rid of half the threads here at the moment. It all counts, and from the looks of things they have the best "game" in town.

One of my favorite breweries. Cabin Fever and Poet are solid beers. Based on my travels, I would suggest Shorts is a much better example of a Michigan brewery that needs to step it up. They are vastly overrated.

Actually, good sir, if you READ the OP's post it is only fishing for a one word answer. He states what he thinks defines a brewery that needs to "step it up" so why would I rehash something I agree fits his bill.
You are obviously a Michigan homer.
I won't deny that I am as well.
But Larry and the gang have done more to irk me, than inspire me, as of late.

    Merry Christmas.

    Shorts, overrated?
Explain. Give me 30 beers they've made that you haven't liked.

I would counter argue that more breweries should adopt alchemists model. I've had that debate with many friends and I'd toss Night Shift Brewing as an example. They make a bunch of good beers but not one you could say is out of this world. Backacre and Alchemist can stick to their single offering as long as it's that damn good.

Happy Festivus Uncle Leo. I just think that Humalupalicious is a hoppy mess. I thoroughly enjoyed Controversious Maximus however.

It was previously mentioned earlier but Sierra Nevada does a ton for the beer industry that you will never see. With their size and the amount of $ that they have, they do a ton of research and development that benefits the entire industry. They are doing great things for beer in America aside from making solid brands that will never go out of style.

Rogue has needed to step it up for about 15 years. Unfortunately, when they finally tried, they came up with ridiculous stuff like donut beer.

Frankenmuth Brewery. Don't have much variety, beers all taste watered down, don't bring much to the table in the area of seasonal's and limited releases. I personally believe that if they weren't in a tourist town they would have gone out of business a long time ago.

Rogue, step it up by dropping prices by about 25%.

Stone, expensive in most places and not actually better than their competition.

Snake River Brewery, the lager is great but everything else is pretty meh.

I agree - if they had to depend on the Hatter series of IPA they would be shuttered. Their barrel program is very good however.

Saying that, I would say Goose Island - the fact that they can't provide every man, woman and mule with at least Proprietor and Rye X2 means they need to step their barrel program up as well.

    Abita.

They are capable of making excellent beers, as evidenced by their Select series. But the Select series is draft only and never gets bottled. Instead, only their thin-flavored lagers sit on the shelves.

man... ROGUE is getting hit hard in here so i wont/..... let' see, DOG FISH HEAD< POW >@!$#! expensive weirdness. win me over with a new year round offering other than 90 minute that is priced reasonably.

the STONE MIXED 12 pak was killer... they could use a little more variety but they are solid. dont get the hate.

NARWHAL is quite good. their best new beer since torpedo.

i could use a new FW beer... mostly just Union Jack for me.

more barrel offerings from DESCHUTES, they have been edging into the market.

OP ------ UNIBROUE and North Coast? maybe they need to update their marketing but they are both making excellent beer --- unibroue? the northcoast old ale for this year is a killer deal... who's next Ommegang?

I am judging my post based on beers that are readily available to me, but I have no desire to try more of their "main line" or pay $8-$12 for a 22oz special release beer because I was not impressed the first or second time around. Whether it be a bad first impression, poor branding, or lack of appeal of their beers, this is my list:

Lost Coast, Anderson Valley,Mendocino, Lazy Magnolia, Clown Shoes, Cricket Hill, Pyramid, Boulder, Shipyard, Great Divide, Full Pint, and locally Red Hare.
