Howdy, My family and I will be moving to the Detroit area for work after the first of the year. We're going to be in an apartment downtown through the end of March and then will be moving into a house in the Royal Oak/Berkley area (provided the house search goes well). Is there a pretty solid group of BAs around Detroit? There are some awesome folks here in Cincinnati that have been really good to me and I would love to get in with a tasting group once I have my feet on a ground a bit up there. I actually spent the first 22 years of my life in MI and still have a lot of friends in Grand Rapids, so I'm happy to be returning to the mitten. I look forward to hopefully meeting some of you once I am settled in.
Yep, there's a lot of us that live in the RO/Berkley area. We used to get together monthly but the tastings got way too big, so now different groups of us get together at different times. Hope to see ya around. Cheers!
I'm part of the downriver scum SE Michigan folks. We bag on the Royal Oak / Ferndale / Berkley people but really we are just jealous of their superior location in the state as well as the fact that they see distribution typically a few days earlier than Wayne County. The only thing keeping us afloat is the Oak Cafe & Discount Drinks.
I am jealous of you having Oak Cafe. A laid back, reasonably priced good beer bar would kill in the royal oak area.
Also in the SE MI area, but I've only been on BA for a little bit -- so given that, if you get a bottle share together, let me know!
we've been thinking of doing something in the future. i really want to do a contemporary style beer bar/pizzeria. not like biga. that's fancy and over priced. i'm talking a fun laid back atmosphere. i don't wanna be like OEB, clubhouse, etc. I want people to come and get great food, beer at an honest price. right now we're just a sports bar on the eastside with great food and some cool beer. i'm hoping we can make this a reality in the future.
Would be awesome....We need a place like that in Livonia..You know, the place of Chain restaurants, big box stores, and BMC coming out the ears...So come on down...lol
I have wondering the same thing. I am on the Plymouth-Canton area and would not mind taking part in a tasting or two.
I work in Ferndale and the selection at OEB is good, but the prices are WAY too high. I wish the Oak in Wyandotte wasn't so far.
imo slows usually reps the best tap list and easily the best prices....bruery 13oz pours 7$ thats cheaper than buying the bottle at a store.
There's a fairly large group of BA's around the Detroit area, its just a matter of getting active and making friends. My advice is to start having smaller tastings and keep an open door to people from the site...you'd be surprised how quickly you'll get hooked in with the right folks. Some of the nicest people in Michigan are active on this site and I've met people through BA that I'd consider close friends now. I'm in Livonia, so say when and where and we'll make it happen.
Not to pile on The Oak... but they had BCBS 2011, 2012, 2013 and Barleywine on tap for over a week and a half. 13 finally kicked, but Barleywine is still going.
