Stay away from Boneyard Notorious and Stone Enjoy By, they're those boozy, messes that you've mentioned. More for the rest of us!

Eventually people will just want beer to drink and not an object to claim they have conquered. Until then. I guess it's more of the apease the turn it up to 11 beer trophy crowd.

Totally agree with the person that said many of the Triple IPAs drink like American Barleywines ... but, then again, some don't. The aforementioned Boneyard Notorious and Hopsicle both drink like high powered IPAs.

I doubt the use of IPA versus Barleywine is a marketing gimmick by the breweries ... because many people are making Barleywines as well. I'd guess it's either a failing of craft - it must be incredibly hard to do something that extreme that still has a semblance of balance - a failing of palate - it's garbage and they think it tastes good - or a difference of palate - some people appreciate unbalanced things at times. You may be saying it's super sweet, crazy hoppy viscous, unbalanced, yuck! And others may be saying - exactly, but that's why it's delicious. Is cotton candy too sweet or does it satisfy your sweet tooth?

You're right- nobody could possibly enjoy those hot, extremely dry, and extremely flavorful beers  Just like nobody truly enjoys wine, or spirits.

Don't care for them. Tried Devil Dancer once. Did not like it.

Triple ipas can be hoppy, you are just correlating hoppiness with bitterness. They wont be bitter but ill be damned if many of them don't have huge hop flavors.

I agree. They don't have to be a "big ol' mess" though at high abv's. If it's not some jack ass who doesn't know how to brew a higher abv brew, and is simply tossing MORE in the beer. See the folks at Westvleteren, St. Bernardus...etc.

A St. Bernardus Christmas (to be seasonally appropriate) is anything but a big ol' mess. It's a beautiful thing.

Dogfish head posted a picture of their beers on tap for an upcoming event and listed their 120 minute ipa as a barleywine.

I don't care what they are labeled as, I really enjoy Devil Dancer and Hop Dam (which was just released today).

None of the triple IPAs being discussed are even remotely close to a barleywine. Have you had a triple IPA or a barleywine before?

the extreme is usually bad. sometimes it leads to something better down the line, sometimes it is just dangerous.

TRIPLE IPA is just bad form in my mind...if anything it is something else all together at that point isn't it? more of a Barley Wine... maybe West Coast Barley Wine. something like that...

i mean, i have had a couple dipas knock me on my ass... i don't really want to push that boundary. i may get blasted from time to time, but i don't choose a beer for it's ability to get me more boozed up faster.

triple ipa = the 4loco of beer.

Lagunitas has a fantasticly mooth one right now (Fusion 18) but I think they call it a triple because of the 3x hops they use. It is 10%+.
Mikkeller has a "quad ipa" called eye eye pa that is definitely a messy one at 14%.

Simtra to me is the BEST ale out there period. The 11.25% is very deceptive. It's got great aroma and flavor without any alcohol burst. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
If you haven't tried one, seek one out and enjoy the bomber...

I've always associated Triple IPAs with American barleywines. Heck, I've associated a lot of Double IPAs with American barleywines. No, they are not the same, but a lot of Double or Triple IPAs have very similar characteristics to barleywines.

Devil Dancer is polarizing. It is a grapefruit bomb with more booze and malt than you want. Bitter, boozy and damn good if you're on the verge of Lupulin intolerance and need three weeks off hops. When I tried it, I was on that verge. I liked it

Boneyard Notorious is a fantastic syrupy grapefruit hop explosion.
Simtra is a go to and makes me wish notorious was in a bottle
There are some triple IPAs that drink far from a barleywine.
    Though many do.

I'm thirty five minutes from getting my growler filled with fresh Simtra. I avoid doing so because I'll drink it all in the same day I have it filled.
This Devil Dancer sounds intriguing...hard to find?
I think threads like these are great, one man's hate and mockery is another mans love (females too, I know you're out there).
Don't you all feel pretty damn lucky to have so much available to appreciate, unlike so many years ago when all that was available was pissbeer??

Green bullet is way better than devil dancer! Even fresh devil dancer is a bit malty for my taste. That being said green flash puts a best by date of 6 months out on green bullet so I stopped trusting it after the first month

I have only had a handfull of triples......green bullet, hopselutley, devil dancer.....they have all been to boozy to really enjoy. booze always kills the hops in these. just my opinion though
