I've only had a few. Samuel Adams Bonfire Rauchbier, Stone Smoked Porter, Three Heads Bromigo, White Birch First Sparrow, and Jack's Abby Numb Swagger. I like them but I don't think it's a style I could drink more than one of in one sitting, unless maybe I was eating some BBQ with it.

I do need to try more of them and now tonight I think I'll drink the Stone Smoked Porter w/vanilla bean I picked up.

Stone w/ Vanilla was one of my favorite beers in San Diego prior to them bottling it. It's still great, but seems to come across a little bit sweeter in the bottle. Haven't had the 2013 batch yet, though.

Aecht Schlenkerla Maerzen is fantastic. I've only had one at the SteinHaus Keller but I really enjoyed it...I must go back for more

I don't mind a LITTLE smoke in SOME beers but in general, as far as I'm concerned, smoked beers = butthole.

The Aecht Schlenkerla biers are spectacular. (I smile just thinking about those labels.)
The Eiche Doppelbock is amazing ~ as they all are......but some folks hate 'em.

Some of them are great and some of them are overdone. It's just another thing that's hard to generalize.

But these two concepts are hardly mutually-exclusive - indeed, being a "classic" and "not for everybody" often go hand-in-hand.

Fair enough. To provide the full context, I should have quoted Jack's contention that because these beers are "not for everybody" that it "correctly" (logically) follows they somehow do not belong among the top beers on a Web site where reviewers are expressly instructed to consider style (which includes...history!) -- and not just their own personal tastes -- when rating.
