Does anyone else really dislike Black IPAs?

I've never liked any of the ones I've tried. Sublimely Self Righteous, Wookey Jack, Ugly, Hop in the Dark, Immutable Dusk, and Hoppy Feet are just a few that I've tried and I haven't liked any of them. To me, hopping a strongly malted beer just ends up masking the hop flavor and leaving the bitterness, which then just distracts from the flavors of the malts. Anyone else feel this way?

Can't say I dislike them, but most I've tried just come across to me as hopped-up porters.

I liked Black Vine from Ithaca. That was fairly well balanced between roast and hop.

They're not my favorite. I thought it would be a style that I liked, but it doesn't do it for me. If I want something hoppy then I'll have an IPA or APA and if I want roasted malts then I'll have a porter or stout.

I love IPAs, but I feel pretty meh about black IPAs. Citrus/pine hops don't mix real well with the roast of dark malts.

What's to dislike, what's to like? They are a solution without a problem, let's make it because we can.

100% agree. I have also tried Wookey Jack and Hoppy Feet along few others and my palate definitely does not agree with the BA ratings. I pretty much now avoid them.

exactly, they seem incongruous, neither fish nor fowl, as they used to say. The body is dry lager-like and the hops are out there with nothing under them. i prefer hops over malt, but give me something.

Any way, this is sort of moot since I stumbled on a stock of Sucks in Denver and stashed a couple of sixers, later.

Tough style to nail down IMO. There needs to be enough sweetness to compensate for the bitterness from both the hops and roasted malts.

Stone SSR and FW Wookey Jack are both fantastic brews.

I also dislike them for the most part. I can't say I hate them for two reasons. 1) I HATE PUMPKIN BEERS!!!!!!!!! 2) I didn't find the Founders Black IPA to be too bad, so there is hope for them.

    Bull Shit Hoppy Porters?

I'm a fan but I do understand the conflict of something being called pale and black at the same time...

I love these beers. Sublimely Self-Righteous combines everything I like about Stone's IPAs (citrus and pine) with the dark roasted malts that I love in stouts. It's not an every day occasion, but when I drink one I feel I should have it more often.

FW Wookey Jack is also amazing, the rye adds another dimension.

SN devESTATEstion is good, but I like the hoppy/porter character of Maine Beer Co. - King Titus (not a black IPA obviously). It seems pretty available even tho the price isn't fantastic.

I am usually not a fan but really enjoyed He'Brew Death of a Contract Brewer. Great coffee flavor that worked with the hops.

I've had a few at beer festivals. They were all solid. Then again, I have never gone on to actually buy a six pack or bomber of a Black IPA....
