Having a beer that is not completely new to me but in a bit of a new form. I have had a 2010 Stone Imperial Russian Stout hanging around in my cellar for probably way too long. This is one of my favorite beers, and I have enjoyed it with a year on it. With over 3 years on this bottle, I was concerned it would too old and possibly a drain pour if I waited any longer. Have to say it was an interesting experience. Thoughts follow.

Served in a Westy chalice. Expected coal black appearance. Seemed a bit fizzy compared to fresher bottles and the brown head disappeared quickly without a trace of lacing.

Nose has mellowed a lot compared to fresher version. Aroma is more like an English barleywine with a bit of age on it. Rich, malty, smell of dark fruits, leather. Not much roasted smell.

Taste is also muted. Doesn't have the barleywine character that the nose has. Still some roasted malt flavor but really muddled. No happiness left although a bit of bitterness, probably from the malt. No alcohol comes across in the flavor.

Mouthfeel is thick, oily, smooth. A bit of tingling on the tongue is all that's left of the carbonation.

Altogether not a drain pour but definitely a bit older than I would like. Fresh or with maybe a year on it, this remains one of my favorite cold-weather beers. Still drinkable now and the alcohol sneaks up even more than it did new. Glad I tried this today but don't plan this kind of aging again.

    Greetings, fellow NBSers
Mostly sunny and in the 30s this great football weekend. Yesterday my Eagles moved on in the FCS playoffs and today my 'hawks leveled the Giants. I've spent my hours outside of work chasing down Christmas presents, and am mostly done with that fun chore!

Today I went with my first Unibroue beer in quite a while. Not sure why that was the case, as their quality is usually above reproach, with only a Trader Joe's Vintage Ale I had a while back leaving me unimpressed: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/694/?ba=woemad
    Pretty good stuff!

    NEW AMERICAN IMPERIAL STOUT SUNDAY

    Greetings, NBSers!

Been a few weeks since I've been here, but glad to be back! After getting a couple of inches of extra snow yesterday, it is still cold in the greater STL area. A good afternoon to relax inside and have a new beer:

Also a good day for an Imperial Stout, even if it is brewed in Belgium.

    Cheers!

    New Lambic Beer Sunday.

Ok this is me popping my first Cantillon! The Rose De Gambrinus. This is one of the sexiest labels I've seen on a beer to date. Well anywho, she poured a nice shade of red. The Smell was of raspberries and almost smelled like my cellar. This tasted at first slight sweet raspberries, then to a tart sourness that wasn't offensive. The body was light and smooth with that Classic Belgian tight carbonation. Overall this is a great dessert beer , that would pair with a black berry or blueberry cheese cake. Cheers!

As a hop head who is not a huge fan of dark, roasted malt beers I found Dubhe to be right up my alley. It has a huge hop aroma with a presence of roasted malt. On the front of my tongue it was very IPA-like, lots of hops (citrus maybe slight pine) and then it transitions into a subdued coffee-type roasted malt back end. I think it is a great intro into Black Ales for a hophead like me. It was very smooth. If you want something with a strong roasted malt flavor I think this will disappoint. If you are a hophead and want to dabble in a hoppy, dark ale this is something to try.

WARNING: You do not even notice one bit the 9.2% ABV and it goes down SMOOTH and quick. Be careful with this one...just a few will mess you up at 9.2%ABV.

New American Pale Ale Sunday (week 460)

Greetings NBS'e3rs. What a day of shoveling snow!. Parked last night at the top of my stupidly long driveway, dug out this morning, spent my day at the recycle center digging out the roll offs that the inexperienced town guy didn't back blade well enough, and came home to find my older boy had barely touched the rest of the driveway, so I had to do it. I need another snow blower, this sucks. Drank a new beer called Perkulator while finishing lyrics at my friend the singer's house, now am drinking another new one, called Switchback, but it isn't so good. Gonna leave the rest of this one and switch back to Perkulator haha. Hope you have a better than this one Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Having an Otter Creek/Wolaver's Alta Gracia Coffee Porter. No doubt about this one, strong aromas of coffee and dark roasted malts. Taste: Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, malts. A very nice lingering coffee after taste. Really like this one! Then again I have been a sucker for coffee beers lately.

    New Belgian Pale Ale Sunday

Greetings from Southern CT. The weather warmed up today to about 30 after yesterday's all day snow storm which really didn't amount to anything crazy but was quite a mess today. Needless to say it was cleanup day so I was ready for a nice beer. Yesterday we took our daughter to meet Santa on a train ride. Go figure the toddler who fears nothing did not care for the jolly, bearded fellow.

I've never had the Goose Island Belgians so I recently grabbed a couple. Matilda was my first:

And in case I miss next Sunday, to those applicable or to all's equivalent:

I'm trying a new one today that came into the Charleston Beer Exchange earlier this week....Valkyrie Double IPA from Southern Star Brewing (Texas). It's a pretty beer to look at, but the taste is a bit unbalanced. It's decent, but it doesn't stand up to my local double IPAs, COAST Boy King and Westbrook Citrus Ninja Exchange.

Greetings to the NBS group from another great day here at the Jersey Shore. Sun today, snow then rain yesterday. So it goes. Nice opening there, RiO, keeping it fresh!

I enjoyed this. Oddly, I've never seen the show.

There are all kinds of goodies in NBS today, as usual. That's why I stop by. Thanks for having me.
    All the best, everyone. Cheers!

    Ballast Point Sculpin

So today I found a place with a mix your own six pack section that had Sculpin available... so that had to happen, as this time of year I don't want to buy an entire six pack of an IPA, but I hear so many good things about Sculpin. So, that is my beer of the day. And boy does it not disappoint! Today was filled with Christmas shopping and house cleaning, so I think this was a well deserved reward. BCBS was planned for today, but I think that will have to wait, though it may not make it to next Sunday. At least now I have plenty to pick from for NBS.

First time I had Sculpin, it blew my mind! BP Big Eye is just as worthy in my book. But that's another story.

    New Wee Heavy Sunday!

OK, I didn't think this beer could realistically live up to the hype. I would like to formally apologize to Founders for ever doubting them. This beer is awesome!

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/35036/?ba=Roguer

To sum up: unbelievably smooth bourbon beer. IMO, the bourbon is more subtle than in BCBS, although obviously it's a different type of beer.

Four years ago I was just getting into craft beer. I did a few searches on the internet for the best beer and kept coming up with a stout by Goose Island. I went to a store and bought some Goose island oatmeal stout. It was good, but I liked Old Rasputin better. Well, I first came across beer advocate on one of those searches. Once I joined I learned a lot more about beer and that the coveted stout by G. I. was not the oatmeal stout but a bourbon aged Imperial stout. Four years later, I finally found some in my local store - it has not disappointed.

With a top of the cap to RiO, I'm checking in on this NBS with a fruity stout. Thank God for you guys in the Eatern and Central time zones to get this thread kicked off on time.

I grabbed a sixer of this rather pedestrian stout in a grocery. It's better than I thought it would be, but even the wife didn't think it was great And she likes fruity beers.

A pretty day here in Eastern Washington, sunny and mild with temps into the upper 40's. A 35 degree swing from last weekend. I'll take it!

    Happy Trails!

Greetings everyone, hope that you all are safe and sound from the big snow storm! So I had to crack a new beer since it's Sunday, and unfortunately I cracked my Bourbon County Barleywine (amazing) last night for the first time. I reached in the fridge and found this Saint Arnold brew. For whatever reason, I thought it was a pale ale, but it's a hefeweizen. Not bad though:
