I missed out on bn last year because I wasn't really into stouts and by the time I really found my love of them it was way too late. So maybe some of you more seasoned vets can answer a few questions for me.

    When is black note released?
How hard is it to get, particularly in the Chicago burbs?
Should I plan on making a trip to kzoo to make sure I don't miss out again?

    Thanks in advance and cheers.

Black Note was released quietly by Bell's towards the beginning of this year. I think that if/when they release it again, it will be the same type of unannounced release.

I had to go to Kzoo to get more than 1 bottle from my Binny's. The trip can be dicey depending on weather. Drove through snow storm both directions..

unannouced release seems reasonable so people don't go nuts, my only concern would be that I hear about it after too long and miss out again. Assuming that once it shows up people on here start posting about it and the release spreads like wildfire I'll assume if I don't find out as quickly i'm up the creek so to speak.

Do they sell it at the general store or did you have to hunt the bottle shops around kzoo and whatnot?

They had cases at the general store for a month. They made a bunch last year. It was originally released in 750s, but later released in 4 packs. Limit was 1 case per person.

I should have prefaced this thread with the fact that I really enjoy Bell's beer and that I'm not just "whale" hunting, I love two hearted, expedition stout, third coast old etc... I'd just like to see how bn stacks up to some other BA stouts I've had the good fortune of trying.

I may just make the trip so I don't miss out...in which case I'm sure we can work something out

Approximately 1530 750s were released at the general store in December last year, pretty sure they are hand numbered. The 12 oz bottles came out a few weeks after and made it to distribution.

And they released Black Note in 750's for the first time in February 2012.

I can't speak for the burbs, but I can tell you how it was in Chicago proper.

I frequent about 10 shops regularly. A combination of well-established and slightly off-the-radars that get good stuff. I was only able to get a single 12 oz. bottle last release and I wasn't particularly late on the draw (either day-of or day-after it hit Chicago).

To put it in Bell's release perspective: I managed to grab a whole 6-pack of The Oracle with the same effort. Three 6-packs of This One Goes to 11. I can usually get a case or two of Hopslam (though I can never actually afford two) with the same effort.

It was sold in the General Store and elsewhere in the area. It lasted about two weeks at the Store, and it lasted everywhere from a half a day to over a month at shops. It was also available on draft at the Cafe for what seemed like 3-4 months.

It was not easy to find in stores. To put in perspective, Illinois got about 170 cases of Blacknote, ~4000 bottles. By comparison we got 4x as much proprietors.

Also, the news will not spread like wildfire, it stays quite, the last thing someone from Michigan wants to do is alert everyone from Illinois.

We have asked several times at the cafe in the last couple months and have been told "there is no Black Note in barrels" and it will not be out this year fairly consistently. When you call the store they often will not say anything but if what we have heard is mis-information it has been very consistent. But I have heard others say theyve "heard" it is coming but all second hand.

Can only say what the folks at Bells told me. Didnt speak with Larry though Anyone catch him on this be sure to post it up.

It is one of the top ten BA stouts in the nation IMO. You wouldn't be disappointed with driving here for a case, especially if only a few bottles are to be found around where you live. I'll post when it hits the general store. (After me and my Michigan buddies get our cases of course  )
    Cheers!

There's no way they're not making their best beer, don't believe the lies dude. You're just asking way too soon and they want you to stop calling. Start asking again around the 4th or 5th.

They had it on draft at the Cafe this time last year. I think we'd see it there well before bottles hit.

FWIW, a place in Indianapolis had it on draft last week... Not sure if it was an old batch or recent though as I didn't stop in.
