My confession: I've turned into a bit of a ticker over the last 12 months. Between heavy use of Untappd, finding a few beer communities online, moving to Southern California and an obsessive personality, it's gotten a bit out of hand. I'm sure others have been in this boat before.

What I want to know, though, is for those who've accidentally turned themselves into tickers, have you ever been able to wean yourself off of the habit? I still drink my favorite beers, but not nearly as much as I used to. I still want to try new things, but at a more reasonable rate, and without avoiding buying things I've had before just for the sake of "checking another one off the list."

Any tips are welcome. And thanks in advance!

I personally hate the term "ticker." It makes it seem so juvenile. I like trying new things. Does that mean I don't have repeat/bulk purchases? Of course not.

As far as advice goes, drink what you want. I don't think you should feel the need to categorize yourself as a "ticker," or even if you do categorize yourself as that, don't feel the need to think of it negatively. Just drink what you want.

Become a ticker in a different way, but not as broad ranged as the first step. Find a brewery you love and try all that you can find of their brews. For instance, Im a Westbrook fiend. Their brews are exceptional. I try all that they release, but I have my go to brews such as their IPA or their Gose.

Too many people are interested in the whales. I am one, but have recently backed off a fair amount.

Nothing wrong with reviewing beer at all my man. Don't forget that beer is a drink that is made to relax you and give you a bit of pleasure as well. Sometimes, after a long day or week, just sit in the back yard in silence and drink a beer without thinking about it.

That's where I'm at as well. Went from very much enjoying new varieties plus the old stand-bys, to chasing whales so much that it becomes a chore. Glad to hear others have been there. I'm making it a bit of a New Year's Resolution to start getting back to why I started drinking good beers in the first place.

I think OP is saying that he is preventing himself from drinking what he wants, because of the obsession to try beers he hasn't had before.

I think you probably get over it eventually. You find your go-to beers and start getting those more and more often. Nothing wrong with exploration though.

At some point I just decided to stop using untappd all together. I think it was a really useful tool for me to track what I had tried, and the exploration it inspired also helped me build my palate and figure out how to define the beers that I liked. Eventually, though, spotty wifi/3g and worrying more about tracking beer than drinking it got the best of me. No more untappd. I still check ratings on BA often, though.

I've never gotten into ticking. Even on Untappd I post a sentence or two about the beer I'm rating.

I still feel like I'm a ticker and always want to try new beers. Its sort of the thrill of the adventure into unexplored territory to find a treasure and get excited about a new beer you discovered and love that you could revisit at a later date when you crave it again. Right now, I've pretty much tried most of the locally distributed US craft beers (aside from new releases or really expensive bombers), but I've realized I've overlooked many Belgian Sours and more obscure German and English beers that have outstanding/world class ratings but are under the radar on the forums it seems and I've missed trying them out over the last few years. I feel like a fool for walking by them on the shelves so many times without trying them out.

With 2, 500 breweries producing probably 12, 500 plus beers, why limit yourself to the top 250 beers? Enjoy.

I'm right where you are, Sir OP. Pretty much 1 year ticking like mad after discovering BA and Untappd.

I'm making it a point to buy sixers of beers I know I love and knocking them all back. Too many amazing IPA options just opened up for me this year not to take advantage of them over and over again.

I weened myself off being a ticker after a few times out when I would pass up on beers I truly love for something I never tried...and subsequently got burned by sub-par beer. Try "playing the hits" for a bit. In the end balance is key.

Just drink Russian River, Firestone Walker, and Sierra Nevada. That's all you'll need out there in California. Maybe some Stone here and there as well.

That should wean you off pretty easily.

I had no idea what a ticker was, and just looked it up. It describes me almost perfectly, although I'm not sure if I should be proud or frustrated about it.

IDK if one accidentally becomes a "ticker" of anything. People generally try new things because they might find that they like one beer more than the other. I can't imagine a world where everyone just stops trying new things because they are satisfied with the first one they tried. Variety is the spice of life:wink::wink::wink:

Too much emphasis on this site is on taking a picture of your haul to e-brag than to actually enjoy the beer.

I look at it as an educational experience - I'd gotten stuck on IPAs for a long while, and I want to have a broader experience of styles. For me, it kind of goes in cycles. Tick for a while, then spend a while drinking established favorites. The term actually comes from the bird watching community.

In WI there are so many good beers I am not trying, because I buy sixers of beer I know I enjoy. I also buy beer to trade and share which brings in new beers. It's hard not to tick when there is just an overwhelming amount of excellent beer being produced each month.
