    1. You are quoting the wrong person.

    2. Before you go hating Ryan's opinion, you may want to look at the others who are pushing this information based on personal opinion and a complete lack of facts or relevant information. It can get annoying when some portray baseless opinions as facts.

Also on the topic of Black Note...My buddy and I had a fresh BN and BCBS side by side and they both were flawless...we gave the slight edge to BN and I mean VERY slight edge. But then we recently had a Black Note that had been aged for almost a year and it honestly was the biggest let down I have ever had. Does BN not age well? Maybe we had a bad bottle? It tasted like Bells Double Cream stout and there was no bourbon barrel presence. So disappointing because BN was one of our favorite beers fresh. Would appreciate feedback on anyone who has had aged BN.

How about the fact that Bells and other brewers like GI have complete control over what the minimum MSRP is on their products?

Why would you put out a product, that sells out instantly or before it even hits a shelf, that you're not making money on? Why would you not raise the price a few dollars, perhaps even a lot...
You really think people wouldn't jump on a MSRP $40 bottle of BCBS coconut/cherry/backyard/vanilla/etc....
GI could put out a $50 bottle of a new BCBS variant and they would still sell out instantaneously...

GI knowing this...if they weren't making money on their BA stuff, they would raise the price.

Unless GI and you are under the impression that the MSRP of GI's bcbs at ~$21 is the maximum most people are willing to spend. Even though it takes about 5 seconds to find a dozen people on here saying they just paid $30 or more for a variant and were not the least bit concerned..

I'm seeing people put up $75 or more worth of beer for proprietors...You are insane if you think GI is not getting their proper cut...

The execs at GI and ABinBev want EVERY dollar they can get their slimy little hands on...If they needed to raise their price a dollar or ten in order to turn a profit on every beer they sell, they would have 3 years ago.
^^You are INSANE if you think otherwise.

I think we all owe GI a huge hug and some thank you cards. Every year right around Christmas they give us this beer that they've spent the entire year aging and making for absolutely no profit at all! They are just simply giving us this gem of a beer, that this entire board literally self imploded on after its release, just to be nice guys. O wait, I guess it's because of all that Goose Island IPA and Honkers we all bought the rest of the year?
I don't know..All I know now is those execs over at ABinBev are awesome for giving us this beer out of the goodness of their hearts...
Along with all those kegs of BCBS around the city. I really gotta figure out who to thank at GI. I mean obviously not the bars, as they are the greedy ones actually making money!

^^Seeing as how the sisters obviously fall under this same category.. I really am left wondering how GI stays afloat? Is it Honkers, Green Line or their IPA. I mean they are all outstanding representations of their styles that just fly off the shelves left and right. Or is it the 312?

Just because BELLS gets most of their profits from Two Hearted and Oberon....How does that suddenly translate to no brewer turns a good profit on their BA beers?
How many BA beers does bells put out? One? And how much have they produced of it? ....

If they wanted to build new breweries to pump out Black Note in order to make more money, they absolutely could and would. I'm thinking the owners of Bells are a little more mature than yer average beeradvocate..Perhaps they are more sophisticated than wanting Black Note 24/7 and their business plan has no desire to only make a strong BA stout.
I don't know about you, but I would get bored very quickly with my business if we only made one type of beer and it tasted the same every time you brewed it. Variety is the spice of life and is such why brewers make more than BA stouts.

We all would eventually get tired of Black Note and BCBS if thats all we had to drink.

You sure typed a boat load of words. I'm convinced. No one can possibly type that many words and be wrong.

no one said anyone was making zero profit on barrel aged beers. i'm saying that the margin on non-BA beers is far, far higher. as a homebrewer, i can churn out 5 gallons of pale ale (buying hops by the pound, reusing yeast, and buying bulk base malt) for 10 bucks. ten dollars, and that's at a scale accessible to homebrewers. just imagine the scale that, say, bell's achieves where one of their many fermenters is 800 barrels and how much less the material cost is. a batch of two hearted is (probably, i'm estimating here) ready in under 2 weeks. a batch of black note (and bear in mind, this doesn't even include the time the individual components spend in fermenters) takes (an estimate of) a minimum of 6 months in barrels. in the 6 months that a batch of black note spends in barrels, bell's can churn out 12 batches of two hearted, which has a material cost of practically nothing. black note, on the other hand, requires a multitude of additional expenses on top of normal brewing staff. it's a no brainer for bell's to churn out a recipe they could do in their sleep a dozen times versus a single batch of a finicky, higher cost-of-goods product that is subject to the whims of the barrels.

so you're wondering, why does bell's even do black note in the first place? maybe larry bell likes beer and wants to put out good ass beer even if it doesn't make him the most money all the time. i'd believe it. or, even if you think he's not entirely altruistic, putting out new things like black note keeps people interested in bell's.

I'm having one now and I agree as well as disagree with your assessment. When first opened I got some bourbon in the nose but probably less than when it was a fresh beer, but, like you, I got minimal bourbon in the taste. But as it has warmed up I'm getting good bourbon in the nose and taste. The taste is more creamy than what I remember when this beer was fresh, so your Double Cream Stout wording is close. This continues to be an amazing beer!

I recently read a posting on a beer blog where they tasted some aged Double Cream Stout at 1 and 2 years. The things they described didn't sound very good to me. Being that that beer is in Black Note, I wonder if it's just best to consume it fresh. Now I would assume a bottle of BA Expedition would age nicely, but those don't exist. :slight_frown:
