Ok so I don't live in Brooklyn but a friend of mine who is far from a craft beer nut just bought three 4-packs of BCBS/BCBW/BCBCS at $34 each for a grand total of $111 with tax. Is the norm? I feel like driving to NY and laying into them. I haven't paid more than $20ish for a 4-pack. I guess the bottom line is he paid it but ugh, this is absurd......

Pardon my bluntness...You should tell your friend to try his best to hide the giant "Sucker" tattoo he has across his forehead.

I don't know exactly what your question is but no, it's not the norm. Plenty of places on LI had BCBS/BCBBW for ~$20-25. But hey, the lights aren't going to keep themselves on.

He did not have to if he did not want to. I know of places that were charging $12 and 15+ for bcs variants singles per. The bottom line is no one's holding a gun to your head. You can walk away.

I'd gladly pay that price here, especially the coffee. They were $9/ea here in Philly.

Yeah, that's basically $8.50 a bottle, which isn't outrageous of a price. I'm sure you can find 50 other people on this site that paid $9+ for a single and would do it again if they had a chance.

Overpriced, obviously...but not anything we haven't seen before.

Yeah he overpaid, but my question is why would anyone who is "far from a craft beer nut" pay $112 for 12 beers ???

it all depends..personally id never WANT to pay more than $25 a 4 pack (after tax) but if I happened to stumble upon some coffee or BCBW which im having trouble finding where im at for an extra $10 each id probably do it. comes to $20 extra. whats 20 bucks worth nowadays? not shit really.

I picked up some BCBS for $22 today. The problem is too many people pay the price for the overpriced beer so the unscrupulous sellers can get away with selling it for that.

Overpriced, maybe, but it still was purchased, so the price was right for both your friend and the owner. If it just sat, then the owner would need to rethink his prices.

That's quite the price. I've seen it from $24+ for a 4 pack of Coffee or Barleywine. Also seen Coffee for $10 a bottle.

Thats one way of looking at a and certainly some people think this way too. But I doubt the price was right for the buyer, probably more like the price he thought he had to pay.

My way of looking at is a middleman who is not the creator or consumer of the beer is taking advantage of limited supply and high demand and charging a price beyond was intended by the creator of the beer. With popularity of craft beer, "scalping" is finding its way into the market. In some instances, if creator of beer (see RR or Alchemist) finds out about this the middleman will lose his opportunity to sell this beer.

Everytime a new limited beer comes out and a few stores utilize a larger-than-average markup rate, it boils down to supply and demand. I am not a business owner. However, I do remember the fundamental of economics. We can all blame ourselves as well. The more calls a store gets about a new beer, the more likely an owner with a capitalist business attitude is likely to raise the price.

Some breweries care about the costumer and want their beer to be available for everyone (e.g., as you mentioned, Vinnie and John). However for In-Bev to worry about a few stores overcharging isn't very likely. Just as others stated, don't reinforce a store's practice of overcharging and encourage your friends to do the same. I buy from store owners that may overcharge on a beer I want. If it's more than I want to pay, I am honest with them and I will pass on it.

I hate to say it, but BCBCS is so good they can charge whatever they want and I'll probably still buy it. And it'll be worth it.

You go to a bar around here (LI, NYC), you'll pay around $8 for a quality beer so for a beer as hard to get as bcbcs, why not? Its only an extra $8 or so a four pack. Sucks they are overcharging but I still think its worth it.
