i want to try this beer, but 30 dollars is pushing the limits of where I draw the line. to me, Black Tuesday is worth 30 dollars. this, I've never had, so I don't know. Thought I'd put the question to those of you who have had it

i realize there are different variants of this.. i guess pick what you think is the best one and tell me if you think it's worth it

i looked for a thread about Eclipse but only saw it mentioned in ISO threads. but please feel free to find the correct thread and post it here, with a condescending remark, if there is one

    Cheers!

I really don't think any beer is worth $30 dollars. But than if I had the money, I'd probably give in! Would like to try this...maybe in the next lifetime.

Split a bottle with a friend, then you only have to pay $16

I am a little biased. I have flown out to the release party 3 years in a row, so, of course, I love it. But I do not know if I would plunk down $32 for a bottle at a store. I did just buy a case of the pvw for $40 each at the party and I usually buy a large allotment. I buy it at the release for a discount and then don't worry about it for the rest of the year. I guess if I didn't have any bottles and saw it at the store I would buy it. I know I am being wishy washy but I would say if you can trade for it first to see if you like it, maybe go that route. $32 is all relative to your beer budget. Whichever route you take, you can at least be assured that it will be good. If it is worth the money, that is another question.

If I payed $32 for a bomber of anything, I expect to have an immediate erection at the very least.

Not even close, the only real appeal if this beer is experiencing what the barrel does to the base beer by tasting a number of the variants, so if you and a few friends want to chip in and grab a bottle each and have a tasting yes. As a stand along BA stout this is mediocre at best. If you must buy one go for Elijah Craig or Pappy Van Winkle.

mee too. I think things have gotten out of hand. I have actually sat down and decided that $9 a bomber is sufficient. How did I arrive at said figure? Well, by common sense and a wish to see beer stay within my reach. If the bruery can't get away with thirty dollars for 750 ml then why would you pay that for eclipse? Ask @JackHorzempa if bombers aren't already priced too high and the remedy is don't buy it.

due to a very generous ba in a bif a while ago i had the opportunitu to try 4 variants. While very good and a great way to see different treatments' effects on a base beer, it totally is not worth the cash unless you have buckets of ducats. Better to spend that 30 on a bottle of black tuesday

Only you can determine if it is worth it too you. For me yes, but obviously it isn't an everyday beer.

In this situation I like to ask myself if said $28 bomber will bring me any more pleasure than a good $12 bomber..the aanswer is always no. This would be a good present for a beer advocate but I don't value one single beer at that price. Your mileage may vary

I buy futures in advance for $20-something each and am fortaunate enough to attend the release party and truck my stuff home to avoid shipping charges. Would I pay $32 ea? Not for the more common variants unless it was one I really liked and forgot to order as a future.

I don't feel it is, but like others said, its up to you to value it, not us. Me, personally... I find it hard to swallow that the 22 ounces of barrel aged beer is more expensive than a bottle of what was in the barrel before the beer.

i realize it's up to me to decide for myself, but i was curious what others thought. also was hoping Black Tuesday might be a gauge for what i consider worthy. i actually think BT is worth the 30 dollars. but fully understand how some might not think it is (or that any beer is).

in any case, appreciate the responses.

I'm with the majority here as well, and don't feel that eclipse is worth the price of admission. Locally we still have 2012's on the shelf for $25.99. At $32.00 for a bomber that is the equivalent of $70.00 for a four pack. Not worth it in my opinion. I'm with you on the Black Tuesday as well, I'd rather pay 30 for that .

    No, certainty not worth it.

In July, my brother was visiting so we picked up two bottles at $29.99 each (I forget which variants). This high price tag set high expectations for both beers... What a major let down. Other beers of similar price tags (Black Tuesday and Grey Monday) live up to their exceptions. Not so much for eclipse.

Came here to say this. It's not even remotely worth the price tag. My girlfriend got me one for my birthday (I think it was the Elijah Craig variant, although I don't remember) and it was good, but nothing special. Would've been interesting to compare it to a different barrel, but then you're just buying more overpriced bombers. As a standalone beer it doesn't even compare to the BCBS' and Parabolas of the world

EDIT: Is this hard to get some places? A store down the road from my office has had at least 3 variants sitting on the shelf since last year. I just assumed it sat on shelves everywhere because of the crazy price tag

In my opinion, it's not even on par with let alone better than Parabola or BCBS/variants, but significantly more expensive.
Worth $15-20 at most, but you'll never find it at that price.
I had a bottle of the Buffalo Trace in my hand for $26 but couldn't justify the expense.
I left the store much happier with a pair of 2012 Our Finest Regards (totally different style beer) for less.

It sits on shelves in one shop near me all year.

Ordering Eclipse Futures is the way to go imo. I've done it that way the last 3 years. It's cheaper then it will be retail, and they break it up as two payments. So you pay say $11 per bottle in March or April, per bottle, as a deposit. If you go for a half case, then it's about $66 upfront for 6 bottles. Then you get an invoice around October that's due by December 1st or something for the difference, say another $66, (about $132 in end for 6 bottles) I usually get 4-6 variants as a result, for an average of about $22 a bottle in the end, but with the break up in how I pay for it, it doesn't hit as hard. I wouldn't pay $32 retail for one bottle though.
