This year was Iowa's first for The Abyss. I bought one when it hit the shellves, and was sitting on it for Christmas Eve. After a couple weeks I bought another, just in case.
Opened on Christmas Eve, and holy Jesus. What a complex, interesting, and confusing beer. My taste buds almost exploded at first sip. As it warmed it just got more flavorful. Chocolate,Licorice and Mollasis dominated early, with the wine barrel becoming prominate when it warmed. It might be the best stout I've ever had. I'll be revisiting Cherry Rye Stout soon to confirm this, but I could still kick myself for not buying more. I could have bought a case as it sat on the shelf at a store near me for a month. I won't make that mistake next year. I could drink this every night all Winter long.

Agreed, opened my first '13 yesterday and loved it fresh. Aged is great as well. You and I must have the same taste as my only other stout to top Abyss is Cherry Rye another fantastic beer. The black butte annys are also awesome. Will be trying Backyard and BCBCS soon to see if either top the previous 2. Cheers!

Welcome to the amazement of The Abyss....and not the movie. Fantastic beer, though I miss the $9.99 days. But that's life. Look forward to it every year no matter the price. Enjoy.

Had my first Abyss last year, a 2011 vintage! Blew me away! As I type, I have a 2013 en route from Chicago! It should arrive by 11:30, and by 11:40, I'll be sipping some!

I love this beer as well. I've picked up 5 bottles this year in total. Drank one, cellaring two, and gave two for Christmas presents to some folks back East. I plan on sitting on one bottle until next NYE, and then waiting until I graduate Law School (3.5 years away, will start this fall) to open the other. Amazing beer and one of my favorite stouts. For anyone in Wyoming or nearby, O'Dwyers in Laramie still has about 2 cases left.

May just be me but it doesn't seem to have the same je ne sais quoi as last years release. Good, just not AS GOOD

I absolutely love Abyss... unfortunately only had the opportunity to try it over the summer when I lived in Seattle. No distro here but a great beer nonetheless

It is awesome, but haven't gotten any bottles the last 2 years, may have to crack one of my last 3 of 2011 soon!

Had my first Abyss this year and was really let down. Won't by again, for the price there are better beers.

Yea, after 2010 I think they got a new brewer. Either way the recipe completely changed, it went more the way of the licorice. 2011 is my least favorite vintage I've had. They fixed it a lot in 2012. I did a 2010-2012 vertical last year and 2010 was still easily the best then 2012 and 2011 was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in the back.

I plan on doing a 2010-2013 vert this year soon. 2013 is drinking awesome fresh though. Had it in uh September at a local beerfest here they had a keg of it.

    2010 Abyss is simply fantastic.
I'm always looking for ways to obtain more of it.

On Christmas Eve, I had my second (and last) 2010 Abyss. It may have been the greatest beer I have ever consumed. Looking forward to next fall, when I can hopefully buy it here in Ohio.

I drank (for the first time) GI's BCBS last night. I am sure someone will say they are two different types of stouts. Regardless, it was good, but not as good as the Abyss.

I loved it fresh! It was on a bottle limit where I got it and I couldn't send a mule !! I've never tried aged abyss ! I guess that's something to look forward to - also the price was well worth it / beers are getting more and more expensive especially beers distributed by Shelton bros this was a big bottle -

Did a 2009, 2010 and 2011 on Thanksgiving out of those the 2010 was the better, also did a 2007 on black Friday it was really good and just recently did a 2012 and 2013, also great, cant say enough about these beers, I have several cellared of each year starting at 2011. Deschutes pulled off a major winner when they started this brew.

The 2009 sour Abyss variant was the best.

It seems to be getting harder to find every year as Deschutes expands eastward. Came and gone within a few days this time around.
