I tried one from Mikkeller. Is the coffee supposed to completely overwhelm the smoothness I've come to expect from oatmeal stouts? It reminded me of Black Butte's Obsidian Stout. It was okay for a regular stout, but the price was criminal: $5+ for 11.2 fl oz.

In short...yes. If it's a coffee stout of any kind, I expect the coffee to be the highlight and bold flavor. Have you not had breakfast stout? If you want more subtle coffee then age it as the coffee will mellow out but to me it's the main draw.

I think the coffee should be integrated and not pungently overpowering. Rarely is this the case, so I tend to avoid coffee stouts. Dark malts already taste like coffee.

Is Founders Breakfast Stout a oatmeal stout brewed with coffee. I don't $5 for a 12 oz beer is that bad (though close to the borderline)- that's what you would pay for a Bud in a bar.

Agreed that most stouts have that subtle coffee quality as a result of the roasted malts. Which is why I feel that any coffee stout should be coffee forward. OP would seem to be able to achieve desired flavor from a good stout. Maybe not as much from oatmeal stout as an imperial but something like ten fidy or founders imperial stout have a smooth subtle coffee backbone and the creamy feel he appears to be looking for.

breakfast stout is advertised as a double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout so yes. Yes it is. Just mentioned it cause OP complaining about price but you can pick up a world class stout like founders for $10 a 4 pack or $54 case.

Founder's Breakfast Stout and Terraping Wake N' Bake is where it's at. Great seasonal Coffee Oatmeal Stouts. Top notch and the flavors shine through well on both.

Agreed. Both are excellent although if I had to choose between the 2, I'd choose Wake 'n Bake.

It really depends on what you mean by "overwhelm the smoothness" and how the coffee is integrated into the brew. For big coffee flavor I think coffee must be blended with the brew. This means the brew will be "watered down" with coffee, so a big thick imperial stout or velvety oatmeal stout will change in mouthfeel. I interpreted "overwhelm the smoothness" to mean the mouthfeel was altered because of the addition of coffee.

Just picked up a Mikkeller Breakfast and a Brunch Weasel. Both are coffee oatmeal stouts and they're supposed to be amazing. I've yet to try them so we shall see. I really have been enjoying both Terrapin's W-n-B and Founders Breakfast Stout but I will warn that the Terrapin is considerably more coffee forward. I think the Founders Breakfast Stout's coffee is subdued by the inclusion of chocolate.

Terrapin wake and bake is the only true answer to this that really finds that perfect marriage.

I have been drinking a lot of Breakfast Stout and Wake N Bake this year. I decided to put them both side by side and I was surprised how much I like the Wake N Bake more. The Breakfast Stout is drier, the WNB is sweeter with more coffee.

On a side note, Cinnamon Roll'd Wake N Bake is a one off release and is extremely difficult to find but it is even better than the original. I rarely drink before noon, but if there ever was a morning beer for me this would be it:
