Barrel aging ever a detraction?

I think bourbon barrels and beer don't play as nicely as the trend would suggest. At least IMO. I just don't think they compliment one another, bar a few greats.

Kane Overhead is way tastier than the bourbon barrel aged version.

BA Old Ruffian was my first drain poor of 2103--could not get anyone to drink it. Old Ruffian is decent.

I will catch crap (and I love Founders) but the IPA they put in the barrel for Doom would have been better to me than what came out of the barrel. A boozy, hot mess.

Totally agree on BA Good Gourd. Amazing base beer but the barreled result was just too sweet IMO. Haven't had BA DORIS, but thought regular BORIS was better than the BA version as well. I didn't get the Cali Hunahpu but I heard it was not the best treatment. Some of the other BA Hunas were amazing.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I like my beer to taste like beer.

Honestly, I'm struggling to find a BA beer I actually prefer over the regular. BORIS, maybe. Not sure what else. Especially for stouts, I much prefer a regular stout to a BA one. So in a way, for me, it's usually a detraction.

I found the price of some Barrel Aging to be more of a detraction than anything else.

I think I'm in the minority, but I much preferred Grande Negro Voodoo Papi sans barrel treatment.

Same here. I drank 2 64oz growlers of IST over the past week, and it was delicious. But when I cracked that 32oz of BA IST, wow it was incredible. And I'd heard the same thing that the regular is better. Having not had previous versions, I can't comment on that. But myself and the others with me all felt the BA was a step above.

    Thanks again, Jared!

Yes, I am weird but I prefer my Breakfast Stout plain.

I like barrel aged beers, provided they're done right. With barrel aging being the hot trend I think we're seeing a lot of poorly done beers, just for the sake of barrel aging something and throwing that on your brewery's resume. That said, I wish every barrel aged beer had a non-BA counterpart available for purchase. That way you can get a good feel for the base beer and the differences added by the barrel will jump out at you. I love Parabola and Sucaba, but man I'd love to buy a 4 pack of the base beer.

Glad to see that someone else agrees. Wish I grabbed another BA one because that was a top 5 stout for me. Really, really good!

I love Bourbon so it works for me, I found out I don't really like regular RIS's. Not really keen on heavy oak as well, wines follow for me here too, I like fruity dry reds, but not the heavy oak of a Cabernet.

If you're speaking about last weekend, it was a 1 per person limit, and only the first 20 or so people got one before it kicked. Unless you had someone with you that could have gotten theirs, but declined.

Bourbons are different in and by themselves too, some are sweet, some have vanilla tones, some are rough. IMO Makers Mark is too sweet, Buffalo Trace can be a bit rough, Knob Creek is tremendous, Rare Breed is tremendous. barrels can make a difference as well with what notes are hit, and how hot they are.

Please don't do any more barrel-aged dobble bocks, the few I tried were horrid. In general most low-mid level abv beers don't make me happy either.
