BrewCipher V3.0 spreadsheet is now up for download. There were so many little updates that the old thread got long-winded, and people asked me to consider adding features that had already been added, so I decided to make a new thread for the update and an easy to read recap of older features.

New in Version 3.0: BrewCipher now does automatic, integrated Yeast Starter calculations, including stepped starters. Because it's integrated, most of the input required is already part of your recipe, so there's no need to enter it again. It can be as simple as entering the age of your yeast pack/vial on the recipe tab. Or you can adjust desired pitch rates, viability assumptions, and other parameters (on the Brewhouse tab). No more whining about Mr. Malty or other calculators having 'conservative' assumptions. They can be whatever you believe.

    Feature Recap...
    - Predicts attenuation based not only on yeast strain, but also on mash conditions and grain bill composition
    - Understands that simple sugars are 100% fermentable, and that they are not subject to mash efficiency or
    yeast strain factors
    - Understands that some gravity contributors are not fermentable at all
    - Accounts explicitly for wort and water losses, and adjusts total water (and related calculations) accordingly
    - Uses a correct Tinseth formula with Avg Boil Gravity in the 'bigness' factor rather than the pre-boil OG (which is both popular and wrong)
    - Incorporates optional Modified Tinseth Formula…
    - Limits IBUs to 110 (solubility limit)
    - Splices new utilization curve to Tinseth utilization curve above 65 IBUs, to more closely agree with actual vs theoretical IBUs measured
    - Adds bitterness contributions for post boil hop additions, modeled and extrapolated from the work
    of Mark G. Malowicki
    - Single infusion batches with single batch sparge, or mashout and lauter
    - Wort Oxygenation Recommendations
    - Lagering Days Recommendations
    - Highlights any Gravities, ABVs, IBUs, and SRMs that are not within BJCP style guidleines
    - Computes Diastatic Power for the Mash, and warns when the grist's DP is marginal or poor
    - Scales Grain Bill to any desired Original Gravity
    - Calculates Mash pH and results of Brewing Salt Additions
    - Predicts Mash Efficiency based on known Efficiency and change in grain weight and/or sparge to no-sparge or vice versa
    - Automatically computes Yeast Starter Volumes, including stepped starters

Oh yeah...It's free. And it won't lose your recipes if you don't lose your files.

I had missed the v2.0 and 2.1 updates, so very stoked to see this. Thanks for the new updates.

I just downloaded v3,0 and on the Water tab, the sample water profiles don't seem to be working. When I click the dropdown to select one, there's a #N/A selected by default and then all of the other options are blank. Am I missing something or is that a bug?

Not a bug. Just no profiles for the selected style. Still looking for award winning profiles to load for many styles. Try Northern English Brown Ale (for example) to see it work.

Edit: P.S. - the mouse-over comment for that cell basically says the same thing. Ant time you see a little red upper right corner in any cell, that means there's a comment that will pop up if you hold your mouse pointer on the cell.

Gotcha, didn't see the red upper corner in that cell and apparently hadn't hovered in it long enough for the popup. Thanks.

Any chance that you'll be making an addition to the water tab to allow for sparge water acidification calculations?

Thanks for all the work, really great stuff!

Do you mean like... what would the pH of the sparge water be if adding 'X' amount of Phosphoric Acid or Lactic Acid?

    Yep, exactly that.

Okay, I'll look into it. The engine behind the water tab is utahbeerdude's mash pH model, so he should get first crack at adding the additional math. Though I could probably suck it up and do it if he doesn't want to. No pressure Utah!

I owe Mr. beerdude some data regarding this math. As soon as my pH meter thaws out, I'll get on it.

    Thanks to each of you!

The only other things I can think of as of now that would be helpful would be a pitching volume for slurry based on date harvested, and also starter pitching rates for slurry, also based on date harvested, perhaps with the ability to change the ratio of liquid to "solid" matter.

For the yeast starter from slurry calculation, here's what I mean: http://spontaneousfunk.blogspot.com/2013/12/calculating-cake-volume-for-starter.html

I did a crude calculation and have no idea how accurate it actually is, though it did produce a nice saison

    Cheers!

Forgive my ignorance, but on the water tab, what's the unit of measure for water additions? Grams?

Indeed, "g" is an abbreviation for grams.

I've used this for a couple brewdays now and I love it. It beats the hell out of what I was using (Hopville/BrewToad) in almost every area. I have stumbled across a few features that I'd find pretty useful (not sure if any of these are planned, or have been discussed and discarded before):

    1) A section on the Recipe tab for timed adjunct additions, specifically adjuncts that don't fall under the scope of fermentables. For example, coriander, chipotle peppers, grains of paradise, etc. I realize I can add them to the Hops Lookup tab and just set them to 0 AA%, but it would end up getting pretty cluttered over time.
    2) Somewhere to enter actual OG and FG. It's easy enough to create a text file separate from the spreadsheet to store that sort of info, but I'd love to be able to stick it in the spreadsheet to eliminate the need to another file for each beer.
    3) The ability to save user-defined water profile targets, similar to how we can add grains/hops/yeast. In the absence of an award winning water profile for a style, it would make it a bit easier to be able to add a custom target in there to assist in dialing in the mineral additions. Or lacking the ability for users to add them, add some of the classic water profiles to the saved list (the default list in Bru'n Water, for example) to use as basic guidelines.
