Good morning better balanced bottled beer barons! I hope this message finds you ready for another Sunday of all things good, fermented, malty or hoppy in your snifters, chalices, and perfect pints today! I hope the first part of 2014 has been good to you and you’re ready for another 365 days of new brew adventures!

Weather in Central OH has been schizophrenic and it sounds like today will be no different. Seems to be pleasant enough for a January Sunday but it looks like bitter cold and white death will soon descend upon us. I hope wherever you are you have a good new beer chilled and ready to grace your palate today.

I picked up some fine stuff at the local bottle shop yesterday that will more than likely be making an appearance here. Lagunitas Sucks and Victory Hop Ranch for my Sunday hop fix. Not sure which one will get reviewed but by day’s end, one will be offered in this weekly thread.

Which leads me to the point of this thread…today is the day and this is the place to TRY a new beer and TELL us about it. Please sample a new beer and give us a good description AFTER you have tried said beer. If you feel so inclined we always love linked reviews and some of our usual folks offer up some pics and videos if you’re one of those techies. Sit back, watch the fun, and share your thoughts if you feel so inclined. But please, share after you’ve sampled.

Thanks for keeping NBS fresh, informative, and fun.

    Good day and good drinkin’.

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

    Matt

    Setting the tone...

Last night's icy chill has turned balmy on the Island Long, and while winter storm snow still adorns the ground and trees, the temperatures have turned warmer and rain mists the air. Opened a couple of windows to let the cool and humid winter air inside.
Watched a couple of great games yesterday, though I was far more engaged by Indy's win over KC than Philly's loss to the Saints. Today promises another couple of good 'uns. I'm predicting that Cincy defends their home field against the Chargers, but less sure about Green Bay's ability to do so when SF comes a-calling. But, hey, Rivers and Rodgers are no slouches, and I'm glad I've got nothing but my own pick records at stake in these games.

Speaking of games, how great is Game of Thrones? I like to wait on these series, and then watch them at my leisure without getting "cliff-hung" (apparently not a real term - *literary license: activated*) each week and between seasons. Up to season 2, and my wife and I are really diggin' it.

Popped the cap on a beer from a brewer that has never reached the Island before (AFAIK):
    Jester King's Mad Meg.

Mad Meg is woman from Flemish folklore, said to lead an army of women into Hell.
Here's Pieter Bruegel the Elder's painting of said maiden:
Detail of Meg, a.k.a., Dulle Griet, below...
And here's the bottle artwork of the same character:
The bottle has quite a bit of info, with vague allusions to the Flemish character.
    Bottling deets:

    And finally, the beer itself:
I really enjoyed it. Brett is always appropriate in a farmhouse ale, as far as I'm concerned.
Adds an authentic, rustic character to the beer.
Subdued fruits and dank yeasts vie with earthy and herbal hops. Nice body and a slightly drying finish complete the experience. Totally worth a buy and try, 'specially for fans of funk and farmhouse ales.

Back to work tomorrow (ugh), but today my time is my own...

Have a great New Beer Sunday!

Hi matt and all the NBS regulars! Welcome to all the new posters too. Today I am welcoming a nice warm up to a balmy 39 degrees after snowstorm hercules left us in the bitter cold and practically buried. With all the talk this week about Sam Adams and Boston Lager I decided to try this beer. Here is my review. I am struggling to finish the glass and like I said in another thread I will continue to adjust that review as long as I am still drinking the beer. I may take it down another 2 tenths and once again I am the oddball.

Greetings to all of the NBS peeps! Cold and again, snowing in Casper. I can't remember another year when so much snow has fallen and the Winter season is still in its early stages.

I took a spill on a sidewalk last Tuesday and it's been a bit painful typing...yeah, I'm right handed and that's what saved me from crashing my head. Anywho, here's my short review of Green Flash Le Freak, a beer I had thought I had/reviewed before:

    Be CAREFUL out there!!

Wow what a great trumpet that woman plays!

I also don't enjoy Boston Lager near as much as many others do, nor even as much as I did back when it was one of only a handful of craft beers distributed widely in this country. Cheers!

I remember it too being much different back then. It wasn't shy at all with the hoppy goodness, something it lost over the years, sadly.

    Greetings NBSer's,
From a very frosty SCMN. It is predicted to not get above 0 for the next 3+ days. Sure hope our car batteries hold out. Nonetheless, time marches on and we continue with all the enjoyment and drama's of our lives that make living such a rich experience. Sometimes I could use a little more boredom.
Today I'm tapping into a generally easily accessible seasonal drink with a winter theme, although not necessarily a winter style. Enjoyable enough and I guess a diversion from all the malt themed beers I've been drinking lately.

Best to All this week and Happy New Year NBSer's.

Good frigid morning NBS. I guess it will be -21 tonight or something like that. Wind chills will approach -60, so I suppose I'll stay inside and hope that the power does not go out. I do get to go to work, assuming that my car starts. Batteries get kind of iffy in -20 weather.

Today I will stay warm and enjoy some new beer. First up is Greenbush Distorter. Is it a Stout or a Porter? It does a pretty good job of both, with a perfect appearance and a very creamy feel. Plenty of chocolate, some French roast, and earthy hops. Yum! I have another new beer (new style for me) to showcase later. Cheers and stay warm!

    NEW SAISON SUNDAY

Good afternoon all! With the holidays behind us my work schedule is back to normal, meaning my three day weekend starts today. Started the day helping the little guy with his first steps and finishing up with the snow maintenance. He is napping while I enjoy a tasty new treat with the paper.

Hello NBS#463! Trying this offering from Stillwater Artisanal.
Slightly hazy bright gold body with a fluffy white heady that leaves a nice amount of lacing in the glass.
Smells of that typical farmhouse saison funkiness; lemon, herbs.
Tastes just like a saison at first and then finishes with a definite taste of sage that it is brewed with, very enjoyable and not overpowering. I was a little leery at first as sage is a pretty powerful herb, but it was not a problem as it adds just the right of flavor on the end. Dry on the finish, with just the right amount of dryness to make you want to go back for more.
Overall I really enjoyed this beer and will most certainly be picking more of it up in the summertime as it is more fitting for that time of the year than right now at the start of winter.
    Cheers!

the grey wulf got a Texas brew ... hell, yes! Jester King is on the Island

speaking of Texas brews, I couldn't hold out any longer and popped the top off my bottle of Karbach's Cherries of Fire.

This brew is a game-changer for me, much like Ommegang's Abbey Ale and Three Philosophers. Before drinking those brews, I wanted water, barley, yeast and hops in my beer and nothing else. Abbey Ale and Three Philosophers taught me that a well-crafted brew and some carefully-placed additives like kriek or licorice go together well.

Karbach does it with Cherries of Fire. Spot on.

This was so good. Shorts Bloodorange Wheatwine. The flavor was off the charts bloodorange and citrus. I don't know about many wheatwines in WI, but I need to convince New Glarus to brew one.

I guess I need to go watch the Packers try and win now.

New Double IPA Sunday Part Deux
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/104028/?ba=mattcrill

Normally I don't do 2 beers on Sunday but I thought it would be fun to do Lagunitas Sucks and Victory Hop Ranch back to back. I wasn't disappointed!

This was one of the most unique Double IPA's I ever have had. BONE dry and I couldn't get past the "sparkling white grape juice" aroma and flavor. It was so unique and fun.

Again, seemed to light and spritzy for a Double IPA but boy it was fun to try.

    Happy NBS!!

Your description hits home with me. I tried it last night and could not stop sipping then staring. The appearance did not match the copious fruity hop aromas. This is not a knock either. I had tried it after I had a dirt wolf and for both being classified as DIPA's, they are very different brews yet I cannot disagree that either is a DIPA. Vicotry has something figured out right now. And to think they were originally fancied as brewing in the German style (I believe).

Liking what I see from the red and gold on the first drive.
Had this in the cellar for a while, one of 1230 bottled.
    First impression...wow, TONS of peat!
