I just got back from a 2 week trip to Brazil (São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro) and I was completely blown away by how good the craft beers are down there. I mean, WTF?? I had no idea they would be that good. I went to FrangÓ Bar in Sao Paulo on 3 different occasions and tried a number of different bottled Brazilian microbrews and they were fantastic. Breweries such as 2Cabecas, Way, Bodebrown, and Amazon Beer to name a few (there are so many more to try). And I'm not talking about the unusual Brazilian ingredients they added to some of their beers. I am talking about beers where unusual ingredients were not added, and with the same ingredients used by breweries all over the world, what they are brewing down there is outstanding (styles such as Scotch Ale, IPA, Czech Pils, etc...). The beers are incredibly clean, balanced, and had some of the best lacing I have ever seen. The flavors were perfect. My guess is that along with some extremely talented brewers, the Brazilian water is also a contributing factor.

I will be adding my beer reviews shortly. I am surprised to see that the review scores for the beers that I had are not higher. I would like to see these beers imported, but I am not sure how well they would travel.

Anyway, Brazil has some seriously excellent beer worth exploring.

Unfortunately you won't find many local craft brew taps in São Paulo. Local scene is more about imports, as you may see in Empório Alto dos Pinheiros. I hope you try Cervejaria Nacional. I go there all the time, not only because I live a couple of blocks away, but because it's the only brewpub in town, at least until recently. Now there is also a 3 Brasseurs.

If you, or any other beer advocate reader, want some local companion to go to Cervejaria Nacional just send me a message. I'm always in need of a good excuse to have a few pints there. My name is Fernando, I write a beer blog called O Mosto Crítico and my email is fermaspac [at] gmail.com.

How many days in Rio? Where are you staying?

I'd recommend Botto Bar (20 on tap), Pub Escondido CA(24 on tap), Colarinho (9 on tap + bottles), Cerveja Social Club (1 tap maybe, but it's a bottle shop and they have them in the fridge too).

No, Is it in bottles? I don't see it on their draft list. I started with the Amnesia, then the De Molen Amarillo, and finished with the Colorado Indica. I loved the Amarillo, but the locals were both good in their own right

Went back tonight, Hopium was on! Very interesting, and delicious beer. I don't believe I've ever had a single hopped nugget beer, or anything that i can think of with nugget hops that pronounced
