I honestly feel like age is so important when it comes to comparing IPAs, and the HT cans I tried did not include dates. But I certainly agree with you from the bottle vs. can comparisons I've had. Pliny on tap is paradise.

Thank you for the response. I gave Sculpin a try based on another recommendation, but I personally found it too citrusy for my liking. I probably owe it another chance, since I may just picked up an older six pack.

I am certainly going to search for some Sucks. I keep seeing it show up on this board.

I was able to get three cans of HP here in CA and it literally felt like Christmas day. I honestly did not find it on par with Pliny. They are similar, but I found Pliny more flavorful. With this said, HT, for a reason I cannot understand, does not include bottled on dates. For all I know the cans I had were three months old. I will not say I have fairly reviewed HT until I try it from the tap.

    Thanks for the response.

I'll second the Dirt Wolf recommendation. Dirt Wolf tasted surprisingly close to HT to me, which would be a big plus for you IPA_Chris if you can get it with ease, as well as a lot easier than you can get PtE. If you are into trading (which I assume you are since you've tried HT), try to get some FFF stuff every now and then.

As far as I know, it is seasonal. 'Tis the season though!

Younger is coming in less than 1 month. I can't believe I'm actually thinking about taking a day off of work to go taste a beer.

    Abrasive.

But it is maltier and (i think a lot better actually) and more flavorful generally and a tad less bitter. So depending on what you like about Pliny you may like it less. But i pretty never saw an IPA lover not think Abrasive was great.

    Sucks.

More similar to Pliny than Abrasive. Bright citrusy hops and one of the best aromas on any beer. But sweeter than Pliny and less bitter.

    Mother Earth Kismet.

Great stuff under the radar cheap and from California

    Modern Times Blazing World

Its not "cool enough" yet but is is as good as all the beers in this list. Plus cans. And Also California

Edit if you found Sculpin too citrusy then you may not dig Sucks..its much more citrusy i think

Do it...you only live once. I have waited in freezing ass cold lines in Philly to get Pliny the Younger to be shut out each time. I was lucky to be in Denver when they had it at Falling Rock. Its amazing! All of these other suggestions are great DIPAs also.

If I were in Cali, I would look to draft fresh, preferably at the brewery, Sculpin IPA from Ballast Point or Double Jack, fresh draft, at Firestone Walker. Those are the two that come to my mind when comparing to PtE. Heady is a different beast, different hops, malts, yeast, etc. Fresh draft Ruination may be a good replacement too.

I have had both Pliny, and heady and heady was far better imho. Pliny if it's fresh, is close to heady. But fresh heady, is on a whole other level something about that hazy, creamy, tropical greatness that makes me drool everytime I try it. Also heady, even an older can of it doesn't lose much of it's great taste and aroma, where Pliny starts to lose all it's quality's the longer you have it in your fridge. Just my observation from having both

If you get it way out in California, Great Lakes Brewing Company has two DIPA's you might enjoy. Chillwave Double IPA and Lake Erie Monster. I love Pliny the Elder, so it's hard to top.
