Every time I go to the store I see beers I wouldn't generally buy but the labels are so cool I get sucked in to buying one now and then.

    Anyone else?

This idea is the exact reason I ended up getting into craft.

During college, I went into a liquor store with my room mate to buy some shitty garbage for a party, and saw Delirium Tremens and Fraoch sitting on the shelf and thought the artwork was awesome, so I picked them up.

    And thus the journey began.

That's kind of how I got into craft beer as well. Going to the beer store and walking by the racks of cool looking bottles every week and finally one day I bought my first one which happened to be Stone's Arrogant Bastard which wasn't one of my favorite brews to date but the bottle is awesome.

Oh hell yeah. It's like half the reason craft is awesome. That and it tastes good. Two great things about craft.

You guys would buy a beer based on the label? You must be kidding me. I mean no disrespect, but a cool label does not a good beer make (or something like that)! 3 Floyds makes awesome beer because of the beer, not the cool artwork. I can see that getting you interested, but to say you do this on a regular basis is sort of odd to me. These days, I don't even buy beer if it is rated under a 88 or so, forget the artwork. There are too many breweries that exploit people wanting the next coolest thing and jacking up the prices. Buying based on cool artwork is contributing to this.

I love looking at all the great label art while I'm shopping. Then I go buy delicious beer. Westvleteren has no label we need to remember the lesson of that.

Of course not, seems pretty ridiculous. Dont care about some stupid labels, but I do understand that there are those that do. Im trying to stop being so negative all the time, and one of the things I have to do is find a positive for every one of my negatives. Hence the second part of the second sentence.

I wouldn't say I buy a beer because of the label, however a cool label sometimes attracts my attention and makes me want to look into a beer and if I like what I see I will buy it.

There's nothing like opening up the fridge in the morning to a bottle of Fantasia . Really nice artwork if I do say so myself. Also I like the brow angle by clownshoes. This gives new meaning to beer boner!

Absolutely I have. I hope that the quality of a label can reflect the beer inside for the labels I like, but obviously i'm often disappointed and it's often the labels I like the least that have the beer I like best.

However, for non-BA members, the label is the first foot forward. You mention Westvleteren not having a label, and while that's great for people that might be bigger risk takers in the craft world (and by risk, I mean trying something you've never heard of nor know what it is) or BA members to look it up, most people likely walk right by it (although, not having a label is definitely intriguing).

There is definitely a purpose, but I would imagine a large percent of any brewery's sales is due to someone liking the label.

As a designer/artist, I consider my purchases to be in support of the brewery -as well as- the artist who created the label. I am a huge supporter of quality graphic design and will spend money to take some home. Even if I never drink the beer.
