Anybody have a rule of thumb about trading with new members with relatively no posts? Just finished one and after it got delivered the guy is telling me I shorted him by 1 and send another. Disappointing.

I haven't had a negative experience yet and just got through with my first shipping trade, but I'd definitely be weary of someone who either didn't get back to my replies pretty steadily or seemed to be very inactive on the site. Live and learn I suppose.

On the old board If they were newer than I was they shipped first. That is how the guys on here longer than me did when we traded. I haven't done a trade yet since the crossover, but I would do the same thing as before. Only seems fair to me.

    i've never been scammed.

if you're wary, you might want to publicly broadcast what you're trading beforehand, however subtly or directly as you can. when i started trading, i would usually mention the details of the trade casually in posts, though for the opposite reason to what i'm suggesting to you (or the corollary i guess you could say).

i wasn't afraid that my trading partners (who had lots of references) would scam me, but i wanted to give them extra reassurance that i was on the up and up (since it was in writing on the site that i was obligated to send such and such, if i didn't come through, they would have been able to link to my posts in subsequent bad trader threads or whatever). they probably didn't notice (i'm more paranoid than most people), but i put it out there just in case it helped.

    ---

edit: p.s. the "new trader ships first," rule is always good as well.

This is why reading through the trade forums should be mandatory before any new trader sets anything up. There should be a sticky with all this information.

Anyway, yes. The rule of thumb is as a new trader you should establish yourself with experienced traders to see how things work. Keep the trades at lower values with off the shelf specials and locals. As a new trader, you will ship first as a sign that you're keeping up your end of the deal while the established trader's resume backs him or her up. When they see you've followed through, they will send you their box.

In your case, since you seem to also be a new trader, you can easily get screwed by another new trader since neither one of you has an established history to count on. Who would ship first?

You should have a history logged of your conversations with this person and it should clearly outline what the trade consists of. Shouldn't be hard to prove you didn't short him anything.

If a person has no references, then either they ship first or I won't trade with them. I also always check references with people I haven't traded with before. Haven't had a problem yet.

Good question. I think the solution is that 2 new traders shouldn't trade with one another. I think a new trader with trade with a few "veteren" traders before they trade with a n00b.

    What were the beers involved?

    Reason I ask is this:

If you were to send 3x 750ml of something, and he said you sent 2, the weight of the package could easily differentiate from 2 to 3 bottles.

Didn't receive mine yet, this could get even more interesting. The trade was 3 KBS and a local 750 on my end. Good point on the weight, I will look into that.

Before a trade is finalized I always say something like : So we are trading x y and z for...Just to make sure we both know what is being exchanged. Is this trader new?

Did you? If not, then eff him... I have never been scammed and people are generally great around here. Completed hella trades (though that all got lost in he migration it seems like) and no issues. Amazon on the other hand, I've been scammed to death.

Was there a miss understanding involved?

I agree with what ChefBergo said, lay everything out once the deal is finalized. Also, this is why people make new traders/users ship first.

Sounds like there may have been some communication issues on what the trade was or maybe just a simple mistake and you did forget a bottle? Regardless looks like the party in question is now here and things will be straightened out. Good luck guys.

My box had a small amount of brown residue that smelled like teriaki sauce. Nothing seems to be broken or leaking.

    Communication, communication, communication.

Also, noobs should be very careful about trading with other noobs. Too much noobishness in a deal often results in something going wrong.

probably what happened was a bottle broke, the shipping company either re-boxed the contents or just removed the broken bottle.
