It's Mid-January in Cali and the weather is in the mid 80's. So I cracked open a Fortunate Island relaxing on my porch with the sun warming my face. Then turned up Gun's N roses "paradise city". Man did Axel have it right. "Take me down the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty". A beer summed up in a song. This beer takes me to paradise city with big fruity tropical goodness on the nose and palate. Super drinkable and tasty.

    New American Wild Ale Sunday

    Greeting NBSer's,
From near balmy SCMC with a temp above freezing and gig outside with the grandkid sledding with no complaints of cold, but very wet from dense and watery snow. Also found out that green wood that was frozen not so many days ago does thaw like any thing else and becomes hard to split again when the temp goes above freezing. I'll take on splitting it again when the temps get frigid again...and they will. Oh well I choose to live here, so I'm not complaining, just stating the obvious.

Taking on a drink to work through. A collaboration beer that maybe would have been worth sitting on for awhile, but I needed a new beer today and this was my best option in stock. I like it more than most do, but I can see why some found it wanting.

    Best to all this week.

New beer number two: Otter Creek Citra Mantra.

Only the second review on this beer. Huge, huge highlight of Citra hops. Very tasty. I agree with the other reviewer that some more malt body would be nice. That said, I think it's really, really good. It's actually quite similar to Hop Ranch, but off of one tasting, I like Citra Mantra more.

    Good stuff. Cheers!

Happy New Beer Sunday all. I've never participated in this before but, after reading the intro a could not pass it up. Beautifully done.
Today I had an Adorondack Brewery Barrel Aged Fat Scotsman Scotch ale. I've previously had the un-BAed version and loved it. This beer was BAed for 13 months in a combination of four whiskey barrels including jack Daniels. It was a really nice drinking beer at 10.3% ABV and I enjoyed it at The Pony Bar here on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The beer was very well balanced and had a clear base of the original scotch ale which was built on by barrel aging. The BA added a bit of extra complexity but didn't drown out the base which was nice to see. Overall I enjoyed it but I think I prefer the original version. I hope everyone's having a great day watching some football and veging out like me.
    Cheers!

Happy NBS everyone! Just finished my first new beer of the day, Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball Ale: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/2533/?ba=bluejacket74

I thought it was a good strong ale, mostly malty but with a bit of hop flavor noticeable too. I'll have another new beer review on here in a bit, and I'll post my pics on the "What are you drinking now" thread later. Can't wait to see the rest of the new beer reviews on here tonight!

I picked up a bottle of Westbrook Orange Bliss Stout the other week from my favorite bottle shop after seeing it on the "new" shelf, and seeing some nice reviews in it. Tonight seemed like the perfect night to try it out on NBS.

I made an attempt at some pour shots. They need some work, but got to start somewhere, huh?

    First pour from the bottle.

Close up of the bottle itself.

And my review. A bit above average, but I really enjoyed this one. The orange flavors brought a unique twist, and it was sporting unexpected big coffee assault that I really liked.

Greetings all on this Conference Championship Sunday.

I'm having an espresso stout from Seattle, Jive Espresso Milk Stout from Two Beers Brewing, while watching the Seahawks slug it out with the 49ers. No question who I am rooting for.

The brew was OK, not as flavorful as I thought it might be.

Glad to hear the upper Midwest is getting some Deschutes. Those beers are staples at my house. I'm not a big fan of the Mirror Pond or the Inversion IPA, but the seasonal Red Chair is one of my favorites.

Frosty here in the Columbia Basin, hoar frost has been on the trees all weekend. But we are not talking zero degree temps, so I'll take it.

Until next week, happy trails and GO SEAHAWKS!

Here's my 2nd new beer review of the day, Brooklyn Blast: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/45/25851/?ba=bluejacket74

I liked the usage of the English and American hops in this brew, I thought it was tasty and a good beer overall. I should have one more review on here in a bit. Cheers!

Seahawks look like crap, so I'm taking a breather. Figured I'd review this.

I call it a mug shot.

Lucked out as I found three "new" Great Divide beers in one of my beer stores this week.
Got to try Denver Pale Ale, Lasso, and now, Claymore Scotch Ale
    [IMG]

Serendipitously paired with some random jarred goods, provolone, prosciutto, and crackers.

    Meanwhile...

The Seahawks may need the Sultans of Satan  to help them best a dominating SF squad...

    Greetings NBS,

Southern CT witnessed winter get back into full swing. The sun was high in the sky though so despite the brisk breeze, it was a beautiful day.

Plenty of eating and football. I picked up the additional Bourbon Counties last weekend and believe it or not just now tried the coffee with my father in law today. I'll take a one way ticket on this hype train, great beer!

    New Imperial Stout

    Hello NBS friends,

It's been way too long. Time to get back into a grand Sunday tradition.

First the report from West MI. Chilly and overcast with temps in the upper 20's. We're to the point that the lingering snow piles have a charming gray hue from all the road grime, though the forecast is for a fresh dusting throughout the week.

This weekend was spent hosting family. Took in a minor league hockey game last night with the family and friends. Saw everybody off this morning and got in a decent run. Given the cold and sloppy conditions it still beat the monotony that has become the treadmill. Now it's time for the NB.

I had higher hopes for today's beer. It turned out to be pretty one-dimensional. Unfortunately that dimension was roasted/smokey malts. Not a huge fan of those qualities without something to lend balance. Not terrible, just left me wanting more from a beer with a decent price tag and a fair amount of "buzz" from the BA community.

I thought it was a good stout. Like the description, it mostly tastes like chocolate and honey. I guess that's it until next week, cheers everyone!

    Howdy NBSers!

The first week of my last semester of school starts on Tuesday. Seeing as I have been over school since 2nd grade, I am feeling pretty good about this. So cheers NBSers to that! What's the beer in my mug you ask? Well it is my first taste of a seasonal beer by Metropolitan brewery in Chicago called Generator Doppelbock. Seeing as the brewery hasn't let me down up to this point, it's no surprise that I'm diggin' this one. My thoughts:

Pours a clear, dark ruby color with a rich 1 finger head that dissipates slowly into a cap. There is minimal lacing left on the glass and no visible carbonation. Very roasty on the nose, with cherries, grapes, and licorice all making an appearance. The maltiness and roastiness are the story on the tongue, and the cherries and licorice show up fashionably late on the aftertaste, and they stick around for quite a while. This is a medium bodied beer, and it has a nice, slick feel to it.

Overall, while it isn't quite on the level of Celebrator or Salvator, it is quite a tasty beer. I now have a new beer to be on the lookout for in January.

I'm kind of surprised that Greywulfken is the only person to play anything on the jukebox today. I guess I'm going to have to change that.

    Have a great week everybody!
    Cheers!

I have a ton of new beers left to try, but I'm still feeling the effects of yesterday, so I'm going to finish off the night with a light offering.

Lindeman's doesn't get a lot of love here, but these Lambics are light and tasty. No complaints. Review below.

New Beer TASTE OFF: Dales Pale 4.6 (the winner!) vs Abita Grapefruit IPA 3.36 (the new beer...) ("abstaina from abita and fruit-flavora beera..." Nana Lucia would say... )

    look: 3.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.25 Best By: 05/05/14.

Abita - 4th beer reviewed. Again 4th place in its class. Every time I try Abita I taste lime and corn chips, some unique flavor from cajun gulf that makes me feel I should be eatin' Cajun or Mexican.

Not only am I off Abita, I am off fruit flavored IPAs. This one feels authentic, but since hops can impart such lovely, lively dreamy rind flavors to a brew, why add Grapefruit juice? From now on, only I add the fruit or veggie juice!

Neg. Abita, Neg. Fruit Flavored Ales (other than pumpkin).
Happily will trade this one. Tasted vs Dales Pale Ale as a contrast.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, pale yellow body with an thin finger of dissipating, white foam. No real lacing, especially after a 30 minute span. Flattish.

Smell: Pleasant citrus-scented hops combined with real grapefruit juice, there's a pilsner like light bready backdrop too.

Taste: Under toasted generic english muffin spread with marmalade?
Doughy, bready blend of pale, light malts with grapefruit slightly ahead of Citrusy hops. It's not bad tasting, if it were not thin and flattish. Good finish as with all Abita beers.

Mouthfeel: thin and flattish. Light, low carbonation (and it could be the grapefruit, like lemon, after an initial fizz flattens the brew?)

O: Definite pass, altho fresh, good finish, could be good with Cajun/spicy/indian/thai/mexican - not a hamburger / steak / fish steak/ cheese / or even oyster beer. Maybe some gulf shrimp and crawdaddies.

Hey everyone, and happy Sunday! It was a nice one here in Louisiana, sunny and mid-60's.

No review for this first new brew because it isn't on BA. I got this from a friend who works at the brewery, it is apparently only given out to special customers or something.

The beer is Abita Client Select Pils. It pours a nice golden with a huge head - as I'd expect for the style. The aroma is bready and earthy, again to style, and the taste is light, crisp and refreshing. I don't love the style but this one is pretty good. Definitely could drink plenty of these on a hot afternoon.

Cheers and happy Sunday to all!

Anddd, I'm back again for more fun. I am working my way through a glass of Slumbrew's Porter Square Porter. This is a decent porter, but I honestly expected better. I would drink this again but there are many beers of the style I'd pick first:
